Why did we allow Iran to build up Hormuz defenses/military placements over the decades?

Did it not strike any leaders as worrisome that a hostile foreign power was planting missiles stations, AA systems, etc along a major international waterway?

Are you forgetting all the crying that took place when we bombed their nuclear weapon facilities? We gave them plenty of leeway and they eventually found out. As far as Hormuz that should have been dealt with regionally but of course the US took on the job.
