At least on paper, the Communist threat was real. I don't like it when people try to downplay the bipolar conflict that dominated after WWII.

That said, for all the constant pining after the "good ol' days" that we typically see around here, American society was in many ways a soul-stifling constellation of conformist drones. The atomization of the "nuclear family" -despite now being viewed as normal - was a recent invention foisted on a public that had lived like most human societies throughout history in multi-generational households.

Get a crew cut? Check. Get a 9-to-5? Check. Marry the very first girl you're paired up with at a very young age? Check. Grab this gun and go off to a foreign jungle to be unthinking fodder for Uncle Sam's conflict? Check.

As it turns out, the Hippies were mostly right. John Lennon was right.

There was still a lot of trust in our leaders. Particularly with respect to military matters.
Conservatives - even the non-country-club types were about defeating North Vietnam. The liberal news media made them out to be crazies. See what they did to Goldwater. So instead of going to war to defeat the enemy, we went to war to? ? ? Half arse it? Really odd war strategy. So war was not crazy, just actually trying to win the war was crazy.

Tell me, what did you find noble about the Vietnam War?

The blue collar Americans who were drafted and went to fight in a war that their country deemed important. They were heroes in my mind! Way different than the cowardly draft dodgers and the hippies who took off to Canada.
Vietnam vets are the forgotten heroes. I've had the honor of serving beside many of them in the 101st Airborne Division and it saddens me that they were so shunned by the war critics and college students that protested regularly, but spit on the soldiers for going.

Those who served in Vietnam should never have been scorned and mistreated. They deserve nothing but respect. But I also don't blame any men or their parents who were smart enough to see through the lies of the LBJ administration and avoid it. You must really love your Democrat war hawks. It was only Democrats that used the draft.

Now, that's funny. Really, I laughed. You've obviously never heard of a little country called China or the CCP...

I despise that war with every fiber of my being. I’m the oldest son of a Vietnam vet. Dad was USMC, and was over there in 66-67.

I thought Turning Point Vietnam was well done. An entire series could be done about the experiences of veterans during the postwar period of the 1970’s through 80’s. My family was one of many ground zeroes of the fallout: untreated PTSD, alcoholism, dad’s struggles with Agent Orange exposure.

You’ve not lived until you’ve witnessed your dad go on an insane bender and hear unimaginable screaming and fighting between a dad who’s trying to off board the trauma and a mom who’s on the receiving end. His pain and trauma got outsourced to his wife and kids. My anxiety and mental health struggles to my daughter. The shite is generational now.

So, to me, LBJ, McNamara, Westmoreland, Kissinger and so many others can rot in hell. Could lump Nixon in there for his half arse attempt at capturing PAVN headquarters in the 1970 Cambodian invasion.

They were deserving of full support from the VA and the gov in general.

What they got was a poorly underfunded VA system that was not effective in treating PTSD. They also got the run around with Agent Orange service connected disabilities. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that my dad finally got a 100% rating.

You have to remember that there wasn’t instant social media or internet news at that time. That contributed to what you may see as “complacency”.

The soldiers & marines didn’t deserve the shitty treatment that they got from the public or the government bottom line. To me they were victims of LBJ/Mcnamara/Kissinger/Westmoreland

They didn’t exactly put up with it.
That was the event that made protesting fashionable and it forced LBJ to not seek reelection.
