He's super tight...he even fired one of his own kids. That kid went off and did college, did office work (program manager) and hates it...looks at his pay+benies vs. what he did with his dad and 8 years later begged him to hire him back. My buddy thinks his kid's grown up now, so he's bringing him back in.

I'd figure he'd fire mine too, but it would be a good lesson for a kid.

A good way to mitigate this is the military...walk in green walk out as a journeyman and an cert and other stuff if you wanna make a living at it...
I agree, fab is great, but NDI is just the best maintenance job there is

I have a client who is a commercial electrician. He makes more money than I do. He and I had the same conversation last week. His best employee came out of retirement, and he cannot find young people that have any ambition or desire to work.

Someone else said it above but blame the overall feminization of men. Men are just better at trade type jobs. They are physically stronger and this kind of work plays to the way men think. Plus, I don’t have any idea why people think you can’t make, not only a decent living - but real money at doing that kind of work.

Somewhere along the way we started telling young boys that their positive, masculine traits were bad and something to be ashamed about. We stifle their energy and their dads are absent. It sucks and I hate it for them.

Plus- Dudes that can fix things are hot. I am intelligent and accomplished in a myriad of ways- but I can barely assemble something that comes with instructions. I never need a man more than in times of natural disasters or when something breaks.

This thread makes me so sad. I especially feel sorry for the troll loser who is obviously intimidated by men with an actual skill. I’m sure he’s a real hit with the ladies - and a total success in life. Congratulations on a future involving never building anything. Show some respect you loser.

This lie right here is part of what’s ruining America.

Because you go to college you shouldn’t have to work hard or earn your place?

Because you go to college you’re entitled to a life you think you deserve without effort or earning?

And at home (no father, weak father)

Also, playing video games instead of rebuilding carburetors or changing brake pads or oil like we used to in our spare time.

Exactly. I’m in a white collar profession- and there is no concept of entry level work in any person born after 1995.

I told a college kid last week who wanted to get an MBA: I don’t care if you’re working retail. Do something difficult and that you don’t think you need a college degree to do in an industry you would like to work for one year before you even think about going to graduate school. Do a good job at it. Your boss will remember when you finish grad school and that will pay you for years to come. Not an internship. A job.

Mexicans are flooding the market and are doing it cheaper than the average joe. When I was in construction(Electrician), the older guys that been doing it for years said they would not get in that trade because of that. Said people didn’t want to pay what he charged for his quality work, they rather pay cheap Mexican labor.

Liberals have done a great job indoctrinating everyone to believe EVERYONE has to have a college degree. Simple fact, is that the trades are the BEST option for undereducated, yet motivated individuals who are looking for good pay. The down side is longer hours and sometimes travel, depending on the trade.

Right now, the current batch of millenials would rather get Joe Bux and unemployment than work. It's the exact reason why unemployment needs to be cut off after 6 months and these government handouts need to be eliminated. The left is incentivizing laziness. They know that.

Thanks for answering the pay question the OP refuses to. Nowadays 12 bucks an hour with a future promise of 20 bucks for a skilled trade is peanuts. I am guessing that the OP is worse since he promises a living wage "in a few years".

Offer a starting pay of $20-30 per hour off the bat and you will have better hires... unless you really suck at interviewing people.

Wednesday, I agree with much of what you said.

However, ask your client what the rates of his workers are and what benefits they have.

If had to guess the answer you will get will align with my post above. Now, if he's paying them a decent wage, includes health insurance, retirement, and holiday pay that would be the exception in my experience.

Because they are lazy. They want unrealistic money and then they do not have any comprehension as to what hard work is. I am praying for robots at this point.

Not surprising. The whole basis for a functioning society has been destroyed. That basis being the traditional family.

Thank God for the hispanics. For the most part they are very family orientated, and most of the ones I hired could work circles around the anglo workers (if you could find them)

Sad!

Offer a starting pay of $20-30 per hour

I will be there in the morning. With my experience I expect the higher rate.

He can’t even find applicants.

He’s a small business owner - and works the jobs himself as well. He is basically a working foreman and still does carbon copy invoicing.

I don’t know what kind of benefits he offers - but he does supply their tools. His labor pool is a very small town, the death of which is another sad, sad story.

ETA - starting pay is $20/ hr.
