the reason it matters to people like me is because we don't think it's right that they don't pay their fair share. I legit paid more in federal income tax last year than amazon did source
did you even read the article?
quote:
Amazon largely pays no corporate tax precisely because it reinvests those profits into its operations. Under a scenario where Amazon had no corporate tax breaks, it would disincentive the company from reinvesting and thus creating greater opportunity for the businesses and cities in which it operates.
Raising a pitchfork to fight Amazon's corporate tax breaks is fine if the argument is rooted in strong economic reasoning. The risk is that too often the data is pulled out of context, and inaccurate storylines circling that data gain momentum and undeservedly accelerate.
The building impetus to tear down existing economic structures without a strong grounding in why the structures even exist could land us in a worse position. The question to address is not why Amazon pays no taxes, but under what tax structure could we be better off?

There are a lot of people who rely on the government to educate their kids who will actually say with a straight face that they aren’t socialists.

Yes, the "you didn't build that" argument has finally made an appearance!

Agreed. These people have too much money so let's enact policies that would collapse the economy for everyone else too

Kaiser is non-profit and is an incredible organization. BCBS was non-profit for a long time, until 1994, and some federations of BCBS are still non-profit. There are still lots of non-profit health organizations in the US, so it isn't out of the ordinary.
Secondly, you might want to have a look at financials and salaries of those before you conclude “non-profit” means “no money”.

I'd suggest that most insurance companies aren't interested in innovation either.

There is no such thing as Democratic Socialism.
It is just socialism.

anything north of 5billion in personal net worth, to me, is basically immoral.
1/ how did you arrive at that number?
2/ do you believe the government should enforce morality?

The people that support Bernie never have any answers to how they would go about confiscating somewhat illiquid assets.
The only way would be for the government to take over majority ownership of many private and public companies.

Sounds groovy
quote:
Democratic socialism is a political philosophy that advocates for political democracy alongside a socially owned economy,[1] with a particular emphasis on workers' self-management and democratic control of economic institutions within a market socialist economy or some form of a decentralised planned socialist economy.[2] Democratic socialists argue that capitalism is inherently incompatible with the values of freedom, equality and solidarity and that these ideals can only be achieved through the realisation of a socialist society.[3] Although most democratic socialists seek a gradual transition to socialism,[4] democratic socialism can support either revolutionary or reformist politics as means to establish socialism.[3] As a term, democratic socialism was popularised by social democrats who were opposed to the authoritarian socialist development in Russia and elsewhere during the 20th century.

And selective in how much you are willing to distribute eh? Ever been to a nursing home that is funded primarily by residents on Medicare/Medicaid? Then one that’s not? Is social security not selective on disability applicants? Medicaid on recipients? Does everyone get a pell grant? VA loan? Just for starters?
Got me here. You win this round.

And private companies can always cut corners? Not provide service? Ok. Tell me why the VA health system is so rock solid on these principles and a private health system fails. Are private health systems turning people away at the emergency room door? Public schools are churning out people who can barely read. Any corners cut there? Private schools are head and shoulders better than public. What corners are they cutting?
I'm going to have to do more research into healthcare. But I know ER patients still get billed regardless.
Private schools typically have entrance requirements as to assure they have optimal results. By cut corners, the meant they don't have to deal with the types of students public schools do.
Fortunately, public schools teachers are typically paid more than private school. This is because public school teachers have a more challenging job.
Public schools have to take students from all backgrounds. I agree that they shouldn't pass bad students. However, we have a legal system in place where we can change public schools via voting.

This is just having an incomplete view of how the uber rich benefit from the infrastructure of society (this infrastructure is paid for by taxes).
They cannot obtain their insane wealth without it.
So Amazon just gets land, power, water, etc for free?

I'd really like to engage with you, but when you just misinterpret (whether you mean to or not) what I'm saying it makes it impossible. Engage with the things I'm actually saying, not the ones you hope/think I am.
