My wacko leftist, Reagan and Trump hating sister actually believes we can shoot down Russian missiles. We wouldn't even have an anti-missile program if it was up to the nuts she has and will vote for. smh

It seems like people are no longer afraid of "the bomb". Why?

Because there is effectively zero chance of a full nuclear exchange. And if there is, it’s not worth worry about because we’d all be dead.

I've been saying for years that I think the Russian ICBM force would be lucky to get 50% of their missiles out of the silo...then out of those, probably another 50% would malfunction after launch, then how many of the remaining would actually get to their target and actually deliver a functional warhead?

Missiles and nukes require a GREAT deal of detailed technical maintenance...based on what I've seen of Russian military performance against Ukraine, my predictions of malfunctions is probably low.

It still only takes one to kill millions.

Are they going to hide in that bunker for the next 100,000 years?

Don't need a full scale nuclear exchange to destroy the USA.

Our people are so soft, something like a few EMPs would wipe out most of society.

Can OP name a single person who is ok with a nuclear war? This is a false premise.

I suspect the point of the OP is that no one should say “NO” to Putin or Russia on anything because they have the bomb.

but again, if it happens, we are so fked that even if we don't die from a blast or radiation, we will still almost all die from everything that follows in the aftermath.

In a major nuclear war you’d want to get out of the mid latitudes. Bombs will target military bases and infrastructure/large cities. If you live in a rural area you have a chance initially but the nuclear winter will cool the earth 10 degrees Celsius on average meaning most of Europe and North America will have growing seasons cut by 90%. Food becomes scarce. You’d want to load up with provisions, guns, ammo, seeds. Head to the coast, find a large boat and extra gas/diesel and head to a tropical area. Caribbean islands would stay warm enough to grow food, and you can fish the oceans. Unlikely nukes target those islands either. Pick somewhere not heavily populated. You’d want to gtfo the mainland US soon as possible

It’s 1100 miles from Florida keys to US virgin island. Typically a 75 ft yacht can travel 1500 miles without refueling so you’d have to find one to steal or get a smaller sea worthy boat and figure out stops to find fuel along the way

The premise is the increased threat of nuclear war.

Rebuild what? How are you going to deal with all the radiation and fallout?

Probably by being in a part of the world that's less affected.

This implies that some humans would survive, eventually to repopulate the planet, and that a species-level extinction of Homo sapiens is unlikely even after a full-scale nuclear war.

Unless we nuke ourselves, we are pretty much safe from any other nuclear threat.

I truly believe we are the only nation with ICBM capability to hit another continent.
