Radiation levels drop off dramatically in the first couple days and would be safe to emerge from shelter after a week or two depending how close to ground zero

And why be afraid at this point? If nukes fly, it's a global mutually assured destruction.
Is that a serious question?

Yep. 80% of radiation exposure occurs the first day of detonation. Within 48 hours, its roughly 1%.

Of course, that's why there is a thing called the Chernobyl Exclusion zone, almost 40 years after the disaster.

Apples to bananas.

Seven hours after a nuclear explosion, residual radioactivity will have decreased to about 10 percent of its amount at 1 hour, and after another 48 hours it will have decreased to 1 percent.
How long does it take for nuclear fallout to go away?
Fallout radiation decays relatively quickly with time. Most areas become fairly safe for travel and decontamination after three to five weeks

I live about 10 miles from Ft. Jackson, the Army's largest training base, so if it gets nuked I won't have to worry about paying my bills.

Calm down Karen. You'll be okay.

I would argue vigorously this is just good advice under any circumstance...

If it ever happens, hope I am standing directly under the thing.

Because I lived through these threats for over half my life.

It seems like people are no longer afraid of "the bomb". Why?
It appears this is the case. Delusion. It's similar to the gang turd obsessed with violent video games. So he gets shot and complains to the ER doctor that his wounds hurt. Well yeah, turd, what'd you think getting shot in a shootout is a video game? Delusion.
So maybe the Cabal sees nuclear war as a Netflix movie. Something that only happens in movies. I call that condition the 'Dr. Strangelove Syndrone'.
They (the collective loony toons) argue Nuclear War is so terrible, so horrific, so unthinkable as to make it impossible to occur.
Add to the increasing crescendo of insanity. A delusional former KGB Agent determined to resurrect the USSR and dementia-afflicted fake President in apparent cognitive decline. Not good.
You couldn't script a remake of Stanley Kubrick's 'Dr. Stranglove' any better.
Popcorn anyone?
