Who do you think was the source for the Buzzkilled article?
Probably two receptionists that heard a rumor by the water cooler.

I've narrowed it down to one of these 8 who works on the Cohen case in NY:
Andrea Griswold--AUSA
Rachel Maimin--AUSA
Thomas McKay--AUSA
Nicolas Roos--AUSA
Robert Khuzami the acting US Attorney & Bush Jr guy & Obama's Chief of enforcement for the SEC
Russell Capone--Public Corruption Unit Chief of DOJ
Edward Diskant--Deputy Chief, Public Corruption Unit of DOJ
Bill Sweeney--Assistant Director in Charge of NY FBI
James Robnett--SAIC of the NY IRS Office
List of DOJ Attorneys involved in the Cohen case in NY
In his press statement after Cohen’s guilty plea, Khuzami thanked and individually named the members of the team that worked on this case: Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrea Griswold, Rachel Maimin, Thomas McKay, and Nicolas Roos, Public Corruption Unit Chief Russell Capone, Deputy Chief Edward B. Diskant, FBI official Bill Sweeney, and IRS investigator James Robnett

Most probable answer: People in the office of the SDNY who are running the Cohen prosecution. Some of their case would overlap with Mueller's. It's possible these sources heard something second or third hand from Mueller's people and got it all wrong.
Conspiracy theory: Mueller's team planted the story with BuzzFeed on purpose. Perhaps it is a honey trap of sorts to get the targets panicked and see how they react. (This has been done before). BuzzFeed was gobsmacked when Mueller refuted them. Even after the refutation, they still stuck by their story saying their sources are impeccable. This leads me to believe their sources were people directly on Muellers team which would explain why they are acting so confused. "Why are you refuting a story YOU gave us?". It's also possible that the story is true and Mueller used BuzzFeed to get it out there. However, Mueller pulled a stunt and publicly refuted it to throw Trump off the trail. In other words to give Trump a false sense of security thinking he got away with the suborning perjury charge.
Option 3: BuzzFeed made it all up. But I really doubt it. Someone hoodwinked them either on purpose or just out of incompetence. Whoever these sources are BuzzFeed believes they are in a position to know.
What if it's Russia? What if they are planting fake stories in the press to further frick with us? The Soviets had all kinds of agents and sympathizers in our press during the Cold War, so why wouldn't the same be true today? I bet it would surprise us if we knew who some of these Russian agents were (and no it's not Trump). I've had my suspicions about Max Boot (he was born in Russia).

No it didn't come from Mueller's group because he needs Cohen to cooperate with him. SDNY is notorious for leaking secret documents and other info to the press.

I think it was muellers team to take the Ohr story off the front page.
Par for the course, the whole russian fiasco was to take away from the FISA warrant that was to cover up the ongoing spying that was already occurring.
