On the anniversary of his birthday... throughout the Civil War he engaged much larger forces and emerged Victorious in most.... ultimately falling victim to lack of resources + 2 failed incursions into Union territory.

He's been determined to be retroactively racist and politically incorrect, so any good thing Robert E. Lee ever did is now null and void.

If Lee had access to today's weapons & technology, he would be remembered as a brilliant General.

I do believe the South would have stopped the war of Northern Aggression.

Someone did a set of analytics on a number of generals and claimed Lee was below replacement level in quality.

The implication was that Lee was a significant detriment to the war effort.

OTOH, Rommel was also noted there as a subpar commander and it claimed Rommel’s reputation came from Allied commanders building him up to explain getting their asses whipped.

Nearly perfect except day 3 of Gettysburg.

No telling what clouded his judgement. Many think he believed his troops were invincible....or would run out of supplies / ammo for his troops.

As a tactician he proved himself worthy of some of the best in some battles, while also proving to be mediocre in others.

As a strategist he was downright mediocre.

heck, if Billy Bob the chimp had an Abrahms tank and unlimited fuel and ammo, he would have stopped those yanks.

It is amazing how much better - or efficiently destructive - our weapons have gotten over the last 160 years.

IDK, but I did have a friend who went to West Point in the 1990s and he said they still teach tactics by Napoleon.

Grant made his name in maneuver warfare, but when he transferred to the East, he found it impossible. Lee had an ability to predict Grants next move, and get his army there first.

That, and the pressing political need for victories, led Grant to embrace a war of attrition.

Lee was a good general.

Two centuries of American History? Him and Patton.

All of World History? Neither of them cracks the top ten. MAYBE top twenty or thirty.

You might want to check the casualty lists. You will be surprised to find that Lee lost more men than Grant and at a higher ratio.

The north desperately wanted him and would have made him the General in charge of the blue coats. That should say all that needs saying. The south had some great generals, lots of motivation in defending their homeland, but lacked resources.

One need not be much of a tactician, when one can overwhelm with numbers and materièl.

Grant caught Lee napping more than once during the Overland Campaign. His limited ability to maneuver had more to do with the size of his army as well as the geography of Virginia. Out west, the rivers by and large flowed north-south while in Virginia they flowed east-west. An invading army from the north has to cross east-west flowing rivers, which made Lee's job easier in Virginia.
