That early 90's movie said watch out, you better be careful where you're going with this bullshite of speech codes, monitoring speech and punishing it.
SJW movement started with flannel wearing grunge listening angry feminists and lesbians on college campuses in the early 90's.
They shouted to the rooftops and then colleges started listening to them and enacting speech codes, conduct codes...these women were claiming every man on campus was a rapist (same as today but worse today) - they sent women to talk to fraternities about "rape culture" and how you have to ask permission to remove each and every piece of a women's clothing if you are going to engage in sex. can I remove your GAP hoodie? Can I remover your flannel top? Can I remover your mood ring?
People think this stuff just started this last decade. This accusation of a rape culture and curbing speech goes back to the early 90's - a rebellion or reaction to the 80's.

My grandfather was a principal and then superintendent of schools for many years in a couple of school districts in Oregon.
My father remembers him getting very upset when the courts ruled that the schools couldn't enforce code on hair length. That specifically didn't bother Grandpa so much as he knew that it was just the beginning and that it wouldn't be long before the inmates would be running the asylum and students would start taking complaints to the courts when they didn't like the rules or just wanted to stir things up.

The use of shame to impact change was brought to America by the ADL to fight anti-semitism. It has morphed out of that fight to go on to be the menace it has become. Shunning is what is used now, and that idea goes way back. It just used to be used to enforce societal norms that make good societies. Now it is done to make society's losers feel like they aren't pathetic.
