The record for the longest consecutive absence belongs to Senator Karl Mundt of South Dakota. Following a severe stroke in 1969, Mundt was completely absent from the Senate for nearly three years (until his term ended in January 1973) without ever resigning. Because he refused to step down, the Senate Republican Conference eventually stripped him of his committee assignments in 1972. More recently, senators like John Fetterman, Thad Cochran, and Tim Johnson have missed periods spanning from several weeks to nine months for medical recoveries.
While, not without precedent, this will ultimately go down as one of the biggest attempted cover ups in the US' political history. Facts are facts:
Roughly 80-day public absence. Think about that for a ranking member of the Senate. The prolonged public absence has escalated from a personal health recovery into a significant governance and transparency crisis, yet it's not on the front page and it's seemingly disappearing in the background.
You have to ask why.

Not a senator, but their was a Congresswoman in assisted living facility for Alzheimer's in Texas for over 6 months before anyone noticed.
A local small town newspaper broke the story when of their reporters was visiting a family member and saw the Congresswoman. Washington Press corps had no clue.
