Look for the narcissist. The most obvious target in today’s lineup is, of course, Donald Trump. When he looks at a glass, he is mesmerized by its reflection. If Donald Trump were shaped a little differently, he would compete for Miss America. But whatever the depths of self-enchantment, the demagogue has to say something [to voters]. So what does Trump say? That he is a successful businessman and that that is what America needs in the Oval Office. There is some plausibility in this, though not much. The greatest deeds of American Presidents — midwifing the new republic; freeing the slaves; harnessing the energies and vision needed to win the Cold War — had little to do with a bottom line.

I'd say I was a pretty strong conservative in high school. I very quickly became a libertarian though thanks to South Park and Penn and Teller. I'd say I was a libertarian at the end of my freshman year, and have largely stayed there.

Him and Hitchens. T'would be glorious just for the people on both sides that they'd piss off.

Concerning me:
High school: started conservative but moved more liberal by the time I graduated
Now: Moderate to conservative but mostly cynical
My high school: All over the map. Big all-boys Catholic school in a relatively liberal city - was actually kind of cool because there were a lot of smart people with different viewpoints. I do remember a hysterically liberal English teacher crying and telling every boy in her class that we were going to be off fighting and dying in a war when 9/11 happened.

Funnily enough, I am fairly certain I was the only boy from that class who actually ended up doing that, and my experience in the military, especially in war, now far outstrips any other influence in how I view human nature and political affairs.

At risk of embarrassment...

HS- loved Clinton and dims because my political education was, "Republicans, like Newt Gingrich, only care about big business and money. Democrats only care about keeping the environment clean and keeping oil companies from destroying our planet and waging war."

NOW- I am a conservative minarchist with some views that align with libertarianism. My first five years after graduating HS in 1996 were a brutal wake up call to how misled I was by such simplistic and biased statements.

I want small government. I want a massive, well trained military and well funded civil protection. I want armed security at our schools. I want more and better industry and employment in our country, with the firm realization that this can be accomplished while also minimizing our industrial impact on the environment.

High School- our HS was hard conservative. Still is. I was a nonconformist. In many ways, I still am. e.g. social media is ruining our world (opinion).
