Not everything has to be so heavy-handed, serious, or nefarious. There are things done by the executive all the time that are just meant to be light hearted and symbolic - no ulterior motives necessary.
The renaming of the Gulf is one of those light hearted and symbolic things meant to instill American pride and greatness, it was never meant to be taken so seriously by those with their panties twisted perpetually.
It's a simple name change. That's all there was and is to it.

Careful... Mexico, Canada, and Caribbean are Native American names, and therefore should all probably be given proper 'American' names as well.

I do think renaming Fort Bragg to the young soldier who earned a CMH was a very nice touch
