Why would we encourage this? So if they join NATO and are somehow attacked, we can now send billions of dollars to them too?!
Helps to drum up reasons for more spending in the MIC.

Nobody is rolling tanks on NATO countries right now.

I guarantee you'd be the first to bitch about other countries not pulling their weight.

Even better, nor has anyone ever done so. The “expanding NATO encourages more war” for the members trope has zero historical support.

Seeing your Buckley hero worship on display reminds me about a couple of articles I read this weekend. Ever delve into the Edgar Smith/William F. Buckley debacle? I find it interesting how gullible Buckley was, apparently falling for a little faux erudite writing.

You wouldn't miss it. I think they are all required to wear a burqa now.

“War” - loosely defined as perpetual conflicts with no stated goals other than milking us taxpayers and sending our brave soldiers to die.

And Finland for good measure

Speaking at the Collective Security Treaty Organization’s summit in the Kremlin, Putin said that further NATO enlargement “is a problem that has been created completely artificially, since it is being done in the foreign policy interests of the United States.”
He added that the military bloc has been routinely used as a foreign policy instrument of one country – the US, but “quite persistently, skilfully and very aggressively.”

Are you under some impression they plan to use nato for defense

Russia has legit concerns now if Finland joins NATO I feel. They were told that no bordering countries would join I thought...

I dont think NATO is useless. But the UN is 100%.

Both countries have declared no foreign military bases or nukes on their soil. And those two countries will stick to that.
Sweden's army is small but they bring high tech military equipment and the Finnish army is really legit (equipment and available highly trained manpower.) Both are already NATO standard and will pull their weight as far as the 2% GDP requirement. They are not deadbeats like the damn welching Germans.
Those are reasons. I don't care if they join or not. That is their decision.

Are you under some impression that aggressive countries don't think twice, and then twice again before attacking a NATO country? Are you under the impression that Russia would be doing what they are doing in Ukraine, if Ukraine were a NATO country?

To piss off the Russians and have NORDEFCO working with NATO under one command in the Baltic sea. That's bad news for the Russians militarily.

Yes, NATO and Finland’s 80 year history of invading Russia should give them concern. /s/. Regardless, fine. Let them be concerned. They still don’t get to dictate the policy decisions of other countries.

NATO has bordered Russia since 2004.
