It is a narrative account of historical events with a theological motive.

Can you make the right decisions so that you are pleasing to God? Bible says no one is righteous no one seeks God. Those who are righteous were drawn to God by his Spirit through hearing the word. Convicted by the word and repented. Forgiven only by the blood of Christ. You in your own self would never come to Christ.

Yahweh is such a loving god. Don’t forget the LORD sent to them a very great plague as punishment for whining right after he blanketed the earth in dead quail 40 miles in diameter 3 feet high.

The Bible is not complicated, neither is this passage. God tries to show you the good path. He is long suffering so everyone can come to salvation. If, however, you insist on following the path you’re on towards whatever sin and perversion possesses you, God will step back and leave you to your desires. We do have complete free will. At that point it would be difficult, if not impossible, to ever come back to God.

O God,
who manifest your almighty power
above all by pardoning and showing mercy,
bestow, we pray,
your grace abundantly upon us
and make those hastening to attain your promises
heirs to the treasures of heaven.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
— Amen.

This goes hand in hand with what the Bible refers to as a reprobate mind.

Their is no longer a guilt associated with the sins. God is saying, "ok.. have it and it's consequences. "

But there is another side to that. A Society that does not stand up against it and accepts it will fall to it's consequences.

Elsewhere the Word says that He will send strong delusion so that people will believe a lie.

It also talks about people having consciences seared with a hot iron.

An angry God is at least still interested enough in you to show He cares and wants you to change.

A God who walks away leaving you to yourself ... I don't even want to think about that ...

He fully permitted them to do what they already desired to do.

And this is what He did to Pharaoh in Exodus. Pharaoh only wanted the Hebrews to leave -- to stop the plagues. But God wasn't finished judging Egypt. So He gave Pharaoh the courage to do what in his heart he wanted to do -- not to let them go.

Remember when Moses came upon a group of people so wicked that God commanded him to wipe them all out including I believe all of their live stock?

It wasn't Moses (unless I missed something) but there were at least two such directions: Jericho (where Achan disobeyed and he and his family were destroyed) and the Amalekites (the latter, Saul disobeyed and as a result was told neither he nor his sons would be king -- David would take over)

When man rejects God's law and surplants it with his own law, ie political correctness and woke agenda. When the moral law is rejected, there cannot be a void, so man designs his own moral code or law and follows it.

the lie: Referring to the falsehood of idolatry. Idols are a lie, or a falsehood. (Jer 10:14) God’s creative works testify that he exists, but some who “knew God” suppressed the truth about him. (Ro 1:18, 21, 25) They did not serve God in harmony with the truth concerning his eternal power and Godship; instead, they made idols and worshipped these. Their turning to the falsehood of idolatry led to all kinds of degraded practices.?—Ro 1:18-31.

Today the trend of this world is to seek independent thinking as the ideal goal, but even as the unrealistic thinking of a scientist who tries to ignore the law of gravity is doomed to failure, so also is the unrealistic thinking of those who try to ignore the fact of man’s dependence on God. “It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his steps.” (Jer 10:23; Prov. 16:1-3) When men try to think independently of God, they set aside the perfect standard of goodness, righteousness, virtue and faithfulness and become victims of their own selfish, sinful inclinations and degrade their own thinking ability.—Rom. 1:21-32; Eph. 4:17-19.

I don't think people decide when they become a Christian. They can't put it off till they get old. After repeated refusals to come to Christ, the Spirit can withdraw and give the person over to his sin.
