What does it mean to believe in science, or what is the importance of having it on "your" side politically. Both the left and the right claim that science is on their side when advantageous. The left claims science when dealing with issues such as climate change and evolution, and in some cases, religion and theism in general. The right certainly claims science as on their side in issues dealing with the biological differences in gender, and at times in the role or importance of genetics in general. In the debates about both homosexuality and abortion, both sides claim to have science on their side, while obviously citing different points of scientific view.
How important is the scientific consensus to you and does it bother you that it seems to likely be for and against both political extremes?

Religious zealots "believe"

Science isn't about belief. It's about facts.

Accepting the premise that accurately carrying out the scientific method will help reveal and validate truths of nature.

even science at some point, requires a leap of faith

Science has been politicized, just like everything else.

The Scientific Method is racist, by the way.

It doesn't take into account my feelings, so frick it.

Are you claiming "the left" doesn't believe in 2 genders? You might wanna tell all the highly religous and largely anti gay blacks, the Muslims, and the Jewish people who make up large portions of the left coalition. A step too far, that should be the title of the 2016 democratic autopsy.

Actually that's not completely correct either. A lot of science is based on theory.

Science is truth and unmoving.

It's easy to know it's true when both parties hate science at different points.

Actually not. It is belief that the most simple theory that best explains facts as they are known at the time, is probably the best theory. All theories should be constantly tested and rejected when they no longer meet the current facts.

It's a procedure to examine he universe.

It has nothing to do with simplicity of a theory. It doesn't explain everything and can be wrong at times. Overall though it's pretty trustworthy as we have been able to document a decent length of time and accumulated lots of knowledge.

Science is apolitical and falsifiable. To believe in science is also to believe that at any moment it can be proven wrong given new evidence and discoveries. If you can't doggedly toe that line and guard that truth you are not very scientific. There are a lot of unscientific scientists out there these days.

It means that man's understanding determines truth. It's a belief that man is god.
