What are those flashes coming from the separated payload package from the balloon?

I noticed the payload package separated immediately from the balloon - then began emitting some flashes of light.
- were we strafing it??
- did they have some demolition charges on board to destroy all hardware??
- just pieces flaking off the wreckage??

Yesterday, the entire forum was clamoring for the military to down the damned thing while it was still floating over CONUS.

there are reports that they have tracked it since it left China
They have a ground track showing it in Alaska
They could have taken this action at any time in the past month (or 2?)

Biden is an idiot. It should have been brought down as soon as it was detected in our airspace. Not bringing it down over Montana was dumb there was zero risk to any humans in that sparsely populated state. We could have received and studied it instead it goes in the ocean where recovery is uncertain.
