The rise of Putin and the oligarchs are a really good lesson that I hope we learn when future authoritarian regimes fall.

Although, there isn't really a nice way to prevent that from happening in a resource-rich country. That's when we have to use the CIA and they don't have the best track record exactly.

Hilarious that you are being downvoted.

NATO was created to contain the Soviet Union. It collapses and what does NATO do? Expand further all the way to Russia's border and install all the latest American missile systems.

There is no reality in which the US allows another major power to park weapons systems in Mexico. Why on Earth did anyone think you could do it to Russia without any friction?

Finland’s decision whether to join NATO is Finland’s own. How could OP consider this some sort of inflammation of Russia?

Haven’t the posters on this board said for months this is a Europe thing? Well I guess these European countries are figuring it out.

They were not being isolated; they sell oil and make him and the other oligarchs a mint. Why we are here is that we have a dementia-ridden president in office right now, and it was the right time for them to make a move.

All facts say that if Trump were in office, THIS would not have happened.

This is such a shitty analogy.

We don't have to worry about this unicorn threat because of the liberalization and economic-diplomatic relationships b/w Mexico and the US.

These sorts of relationships Russia has failed at making. NATO and the EU are these sorts of relationships and the reason why they keep expanding is because more countries want liberal democracies with (relatively) free trade rather than authoritarianism and isolationism.

The expansion of free trade is the expansion of peace. Russia has rejected this and it's has a shitty economy and paranoia.

Becuase most dont want Putin to lose it and start a nuke war

So because he has nukes the world should just step back and ask if he’d like anything else to go along with Ukraine?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with NATO and other countries around Russia joining NATO to protect themselves from future Russian aggression. Putin shouldn’t be a winey childish little bitch about it (and he wouldn’t be if he knew he has no plans to try and take them one day). I’ve never seen NATO just say “you know what? Today we’re attacking Russia because it’s Tuesday”.

so the issue is Russia doesn't want NATO countries on Russia border, so Russia tries to take over an incorporate a country with NATO countries on it's border. Makes sense

Exactly!

Are you inferring that NATO expanded into these countries against their wishes? These countries knew they were under Russia's thumb, and sought the protection of NATO, and considering what's going on in Ukraine, they were damn smart to do so, weren't they?

It's not like Putin invaded Ukraine in a naked act of aggression.

Thousands of tank killing fire and forget Javelin like weapons are going to Ukraine.

Putin could have gotten away with absorbing the Russian areas, but Ukrainians have a very long and bitter history with Russia.

Unless I'm wrong, the Ukrainians only got armed by the west after Russia invaded in 2014.

So the EU is currently offering Ukraine membership. The US in December said it was up to the Ukraine if the wanted to be in NATO. Now Finland is looking at joint NATO admist all this. This is the reason we are where we are in Ukraine...more NATO countries on Russia's border, so he lets add one up north for good measure. Lets further isolate Russia and Putin and inflame the situation. Isolating Russia since the 90's is why are here. The idiotic foreign policy of the US and EU the last 25 yrs is what got us here.

You sound like a liberal saying to some lady that a gang banger is robbing that she should just let him steal what isn't his because opposing him might piss the criminal off and "inflame the situation".

Right, maybe if we had a century's worth of history of genociding and brutalizing Mexicans by the millions, it'd be a comparable analogy. We didn't, so it's not.

What annoys me more than anything: Putin approached NATO to join in 1999 and we snubbed him.

The US "braintrust" viewed a multipolar NATO as less desirable than ending any threat of Russian aggression. Because why take 'some' when you can push to take 'all'?
