I keep hearing this is next on the agenda. How does the GOP handle this without being called insensitive racist? Are they just going to eliminate abuse or will it be a temporary relief like it was supposed to be?

Welfare reform will be close to impossible.

There will be sob stories EVERY DAY.

That one schmuck with ALS already got airtime over tax law.

Imagine all the "victims" of welfare reform

Here is your timeless answer:

You forge ahead, ignore the people who react with emotion. You respond with facts.

Men and women who turn in their liberty and dignity for the soup kitchen of the welfare state will NEVER rise above dependence on the state and poverty.

Reformed welfare combined with less legal immigrants/illegal aliens will create jobs/wages for entry level positions for Americans.

It's all really simple.

I get it but the media is going to crucify this. It is likely political suicide.

The GOP needs to learn they will be called racist, bigot, homophobes anyway. Stop trying to be liked by people that you will never get votes from.

Follow the Ted Cruz example. You can win elections campaigning on "untouchable" issues. If you ask pundits and political analysts what the most untouchable federal program is to Iowans, what would they tell you? It's corn subsidies. They would tell anyone campaigning there that they would have to support corn subsidies or else face certain defeat. So what did Ted Cruz do? He campaigned in Iowa on ending all ag subsidies, including corn. He went from town to town and answered every critic. He faced every angry constituent. He explained exactly why his policy was the best for America and how it would actually benefit them. Trump, in all of his MAGA glory didn't want to take that risk. He won the support of the sitting governor by coming out in favor of corn subsidies. SO what happened in Iowa?

Ted Cruz, the man who ran against an "untouchable" program, won. Trump lost in Iowa.

If Trump and the GOP want to tackle entitlements, they need to follow Ted Cruz's example. They need to be willing to face down criticism, ignore the pundits and commentators, and talk to Americans like adults and explain why their reform is best for America.

Corn subsidies aren't really that close to food stamps, welfare, etc. Other posters are right, the media would be trotting out new victims every night

They're already being called insensitive and racist, so it shouldn't be anything to fear.

frick, it's going to be so easy for me to run and win in November 2042...

So the beauty of the MAGAnomics Tax Cuts is... around May 2018, no matter how you vote, 90% chance is, you're going to see your paychecks increase by a noticeable amount... When people see that, and realize why: they're going to continue to support the agenda/President who makes their wallets thicker. History has proven that for decades.

I'll expand if necessary.

Racist?

Are deadbeats a race now? Anyone who calls welfare reform "racist" is a racist themselves because they assume only minorities are on welfare.

Not on a per capita/proportionate basis.

Everybody moved off welfare to disability anyways.

No shite I don’t even see the point of handicap parking spots at this point when every rent controlled area has 75% of the cars with a sticker

Probably the best welfare reform without the supermajority is getting the economy rolling, and trucking.

Welfare belongs to those who truly need it. The disabled. The infirm. Not the ghetto mama with 6 chillins at home in the trailer park.

This is the truth that a lot of folk don’t realize. Disability is the new welfare. It’s beyond out of control

Since I've posted on this board. I have ALWAYS asked about welfare reform. I want it.

But it has a few hurdles

1. Jobs don't get created just because people aren't on welfare. Any keeping out illegals won't make up the difference in job offerings.

2. Give up their dignity. While it applied to some, a huge portion of those people are generation 1. They are only using welfare because they are having a hard time.

3. Job training and education are the only effective ways to end welfare in its current state. A bill targeting people you don't like won't change anything.

Not a stab at you, but the truth is that both parties are welfare as a profitable tool.

There are plenty of jobs for welfare recipients. Millions of illegals are doing them.

Reform needs to do two things. Impose training/work requirements and stop penalizing them for having an income other than welfare.

Probably need time limits on receiving benefits
