George Soros, heiresses to the Pritzker fortune, Abigail Disney and Facebook Inc. co-founder Chris Hughes are among those calling for a wealth tax to help address income inequality and provide funding for climate change and public health initiatives.

quote:

“We are writing to call on all candidates for President, whether they are Republicans or Democrats, to support a moderate wealth tax on the fortunes of the richest one-tenth of the richest 1% of Americans -- on us,” according to a letter signed by 19 individuals -- one anonymously -- and posted online Monday. “The next dollar of new tax revenue should come from the most financially fortunate, not from middle-income and lower-income Americans.”

quote:

The wealth tax isn’t embraced by all Democrats, though, with some arguing it would be difficult to objectively assess the value of wealth like artwork and jewels or illiquid assets. There are also concerns that such a tax is unconstitutional because the federal government is prohibited from taxing property, only income.

Wonder why they aren't doing this privately instead of wanting it forced on them via taxes?

I wonder if the billionaires are using all their tax deductions?

Nobody is stopping them from giving more of their money to the government if that's what they want to do.

George Soros literally gave $18 billion of his $26 billion to a fricking political activist group.

This is a trojan horse without a doubt. Go frick yourselves.

Don't need a wealth tax. They can donate whatever they want whenever they want. Nobody is stopping them if it is that important to them.

Go ahead and send the check. Why wait on the government? They will gladly take it.

It’s been said a million times: Fine. Nobody’s stopping you from writing a bigger check to the government if that’s what you want to do.

Back in my day, rich people started these things called charities.

Dear Lord if i could only be so wealthy that I am riddled with guilt and want Uncle Sam to take my money away.

What must this be like?

Side note: I am unaware of the tax code provision that prohibits people from making additional contributions to the treasury. Furthermore, I am also unaware of the provision the prohibits a so inclined individual from listing the US Treasury as a beneficiary in ones will.

They're free to pay any additional taxes they feel comfortable with. What's stopping them?

Because it's a brazen ruse.

There is a reason ultra wealthy people are largely Democrat.

It's because income taxes are things that WELL OFF people pay. The ultra wealthy are only to happy to push for policies that largely hit the anonymous people BELOW them in the ladder of success.

It's that pesky constitution again. I'm sure the libs will find a way around that though. It's just a guideline anyway.

Nothing is stopping them from having their army of accountants voluntarily pay additional contributions to the Dept. of the Treasury.

Y’all are missing the point. They want higher taxes (which no doubt will “trickle down” to everyone having higher taxes) to fund climate change and public health initiatives. There is zero doubt in my mind that they have vested interests in the companies that will be receiving those taxes.
