I know it was a little bit of cold war proxy war. I assume US aided just to stick it to Russia.

Also assuming somehow Russia interest was oil. I just don't know story.

Funny at end movie was dedicated to Afghanistan people. How times change

Short answer is there was a commie revolution in Afghanistan in 1978. There was an insurgency against the new commie rulers. Soviets invade in 1979 to support Afghan commie government. I’m sure, as it is with such things, there are multiple, more complicated reasons.

The Soviet defeat by 1988 contributes to the saying “Afghanistan is where empires go to die.” The Brits lost, the Soviets lost, and we lost.

well over 50 countries boycotted the Summer Olympics in 1980 due to the Soviets invading Afghanistan.

Tom Hanks did a pretty good movie of the US involvement in the war, Charlie Wilson's War.

In real life? I think Russia and Afghanistan's relation was a result of the ending of WWII. When the US leaves Afghanistan, Russia will probably have a stronger presence there.

Russia hates the United States because of the whole Soviet Union thing, but to answer your question why does anyone have interest in Afghanistan? Mineral fields.. Oil, gold, etc, etc.

It's just south of many post-Soviet states I believe. May be tied to that.

This and the opposition to the Communist government in Kabul, took the form of Jihadist Islam. The Soviets were always fearful that this contagion could spread into the Central Asian and Muslim populations in Russia. Remember this was the time when Islamic fundamentalism was replacing nationalist movements in the greater Middle East.

Russian interest in Central Asia goes back further than that.

Look up the Great Game between the Russian empire and the British empire. There were fights over Afghanistan back in the 19th century.

Think of Afghanistan as if it were a toll booth. You want nice older folks running it so things run smoothly. Instead, you have a wild lawless ever changing bunch of tribes running it. So you try to come in and force change. The dirt is stained red with the blood of the civilizations who have given it a whirl.

Only because total war wasn't engaged, killing and destroying everything.

ETA: like there's anything in Afghanistan worth destroying.

Yes, and that complicating reason was the fact the insurgency was Islamic. Afghanistan was on the border of the Soviet Union, and directly abutting numerous Soviet Socialist States with heavy Muslim populations. Take a look at this map:

Notice all the the states with names ending in “Stan”. What the Soviets feared most from Afghanistan was the Islamic uprising there spreading into their own Muslim territories.
