Wasn’t Trump’s COVID response a failure in comparison to Europe?

In light of their disastrous vaccine rollout and new lockdowns - that certainly was a false narrative, right? I remember TigerDoc and mmcgrath discussing how Trump should have handled things more like Europe.

I read an article about CNN’s “documentary” on the COVID response. Dr Birx supposedly said only 100,000 should have died, but Trump’s poor response led to the other deaths.
What I didn’t read was why she thought we could outperform pretty much every other country. Perhaps she did say and the article did not care to include it.
I don’t think the government bureaucrats have any idea what real life is like and live in a world where models are perfect and it is people’s own stupidity that makes nature diverge from their model.
As George Box said - “All models are wrong, but some are useful.” Unfortunately, the CDC has very few useful models.
