"“I’ve got guns myself,” Van Zant says. “I live in the swamps of Florida, there are water moccasins and rattlesnakes around, and I want to kill those things if they’re on my land. And if somebody breaks into your home at four in the morning, you want to be able to protect your family. So I own a Winchester rifle, and I’m not giving that up, you know?
“But what’s going on in America with all these shootings is so terrible. Believe me, I have kids and grandkids, so I worry about it every day. The bottom line is I would like to see more rules on owning guns. People could still get them underground, man. But you gotta start somewhere.”
Dude was a commie....

I don't know, but I think they were anti Neil Young, or at least didn't need him around anyhow.
You should google that. Most people get it wrong, to the credit of Down South Jukin talking about them being misunderstood.
quote:
Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote their song "Sweet Home Alabama" in response to "Southern Man" and "Alabama" from the 1972 album Harvest by Young, who has said that he is a fan of both "Sweet Home Alabama" and Ronnie Van Zant, the lead vocalist for Lynyrd Skynyrd. "They play like they mean it," Young said in 1976. "I'm proud to have my name in a song like theirs."[2] Young has also been known to play "Sweet Home Alabama" in concert occasionally. To demonstrate this camaraderie, Van Zant frequently wore a Neil Young Tonight's the Night T-shirt while performing "Sweet Home Alabama".[3] Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot can often be seen reciprocating by wearing a Jack Daniel's-styled Lynyrd Skynyrd T-shirt (including at the Live Rust concert).
Misunderstood

Ehh, that's not terrible stance coming from a celebrity. Especially considering the 60s/70s had a major legislative push to have guns regulated more. He still at least recognized self defense and hunting as major uses of guns. Van Zant seemed to just dislike petty murders. I have a hard time believing he would release such a song today.

Yep.
Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends their feud was just in song
Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
So he wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the Lord
Ronnie and Neil
Drive By Truckers
Rumor has it that Ronnie was buried in a Neil Young t-shirt, and he is wearing one on the album cover of Street Survivors.

Nah. They were cool.

I mean maybe they were but I've really never thought about it much.
I hate that song though.

The concept of someone being anti-gun in a less polarized political environment doesn't bother me. Considering what you're saying about regulation at that point I'm not sure it applies to the time period, but regardless I can't imagine the intensity of the discussion was as it is now.
Anti-gun now often means anti-gun owner, anti-South, etc. (credit Ainsley Hayes), and I'm just not sure it necessarily had the same significance then.

Yep but LS played it like they owned it; the live version on One More From the Road, not the studio version.

There's NO WAY RVZ said this. At the time of his death he had 1 daughter and she was very young & he had no grandkids.

What were the motives behind the badass 1975 Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Saturday Night Special"? Was the band staunchly anti-gun, just simply in favor of better gun laws, or was this a "fun" song like "Gimme Three Steps"?
Seems like someone they knew was killed. This song describes what happened.

The song was about cheap pistols, which are still a problem.
I am a strong supporter of The 2nd amendment, but I think a handgun should be high quality, and expensive to obtain, that way, there is automatic responsibility built in to it,because the person buying it,is more likely to be a responsible person.
I am sure that some people won't agree with me on this.

Only law abiding citizens give a shite about laws.

Ok,I'm a bit late to the correction party.

I realize that,so,I think we should approach the problem differently. We could put strict regulations on the manufacturers, for quality of materials used in handguns, along with the quality of workmanship.
I don't think that a new handgun should be available, that costs less than a new smart phone.
If a person had to save money for a while to purchase a handgun,it would be less likely to end up floating around on the street someday.
It would take a while, but eventually,a big % of the cheap guns that are already on the street would become useless, because of their low quality.
How many gangsters start their career with a $1,000 dollar 1911 in their hand? I doubt there are many of them.
