Was the original Lynyrd Skynyrd anti-gun?

(Move to Music Board if necessary)
What were the motives behind the badass 1975 Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Saturday Night Special"? Was the band staunchly anti-gun, just simply in favor of better gun laws, or was this a "fun" song like "Gimme Three Steps"? I see this song came out after the Gun Control Act of 1968 and subsequent gun legislation, which made the use of the term "saturday night special" more popular for small, cheap handguns.
Nowadays, I think we picture them as would have being pro-gun. Wondering if that is a misconception?
Here are the lyrics, bolded for convenience:
Two feets they come a creepin'
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are lyin' naked
Creeper think he got nothin' to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And while a man reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes
[Chorus]
Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole
Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey
And playing poker on a losin' night
Pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkin'
Somebody been cheatin' and lyin'
So Big Jim commences to fightin'
I wouldn't tell you no lie
And Big Jim done grab his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes
[Chorus]
Hand guns are made for killin'
Ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me
Also, a year later they came out with "Gimme Back My Bullets." Any significance? The lyrics are vague so I can't tell.

Dude, we are literally in a war with Russia and you want to have deep thoughts? The golags will not be kind to you

Even the best of us can have a weak moment.

I don't know, but I think they were anti Neil Young, or at least didn't need him around anyhow.

Neil Young did write some songs that apparently painted all Southerners as racists. And Skynyrd destroyed that MOFO

There is not a real war with Russia. This is nothing compared to the 80s. Calm down Putin will not threaten us.

It's kinda relevant to WWIII. Putin would probably like Skynyrd. Both like to hunt.

The link posted by junkfunky is right-it was a song about disliking cheap, snub-nosed pistols commonly found in barroom fights of the time.
"Gimme Back My Bullets" is about Skynyrd being out of the Billboard charts. A song on the Billboard charts that was expected to rise the following week had a bullet next to it (like a bullet point). Skynyrd wanted to get back to form and get songs moving back up the Billboard chart. Listen to the song after knowing this and it all makes sense.

That is epic. Thanks.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most misunderstood, artistically underrated bands bands of all time.

Literally just started listening to them, because, as you said, they have a certain misunderstood stereotype. They are fricking sick.

I had obviously heard their major hits, but I'm in my mid-20s (the CURRENT YEAR IS 2017!), and mainly listened to country (old and new) growing up. Never was really exposed in detail to their music.
I heard Gimme Three Steps on the radio recently (had heard it before but never knew it was Skynyrd) and I thought, that is 10x better than the shite I'm listening to. So I downloaded their albums and have been treating it like a Netflix series binging the shite out of it.

Make sure to listen to the albums all the way through. Most of their best songs were never released as singles, and never get airplay.
You'll also appreciate when Steve Gaines joins the band in One More from the Road and revitalizes the three guitar front. Unfortunately, Street Survivors was his only studio album.

Thanks. I started with and am currently on the 3-disc greatest hits so I'll check those out afterwards.
