Ehh, that's not terrible stance coming from a celebrity. Especially considering the 60s/70s had a major legislative push to have guns regulated more. He still at least recognized self defense and hunting as major uses of guns. Van Zant seemed to just dislike petty murders. I have a hard time believing he would release such a song today.
If he did he would certainly have to find a specific audience to play for....like the Dixie Chicks do....because for sure and certain it would become a political issue in today's climate and those of us on the right wouldn't have anything to do with such garbage.

It would take a while, but eventually,a big % of the cheap guns that are already on the street would become useless, because of their low quality. How many gangsters start their career with a $1,000 dollar 1911 in their hand? I doubt there are many of them.
I'm still not sold (no pun). Criminals that can't afford a gun in the US will simply steal them from law abiding citizens or get them from our DOJ via Fast & Furious.

There's NO WAY RVZ said this. At the time of his death he had 1 daughter and she was very young & he had no grandkids.
You are correct. That is a quote from Ronnie's brother Johnnie (who took his place in LS) from 2015.

"The song was about cheap pistols, which are still a problem.
I am a strong supporter of The 2nd amendment, but I think a handgun should be high quality, and expensive to obtain, that way, there is automatic responsibility built in to it,because the person buying it,is more likely to be a responsible person.
I am sure that some people won't agree with me on this."
So you are an elitist who believes only the rich should be able to defend themselves?

possibly the shoddiest piece of "logic" I've ever read. Do you know how many handguns are stolen every year?

If you are advocating for some kind of "handgun tax" to artificially inflate the price, then yes, any reasonable 2A supporter will vehemently disagree with you.

Yeah, and as Pettifogger said, the issue is completely polarized today. People probably thought nothing of the song back then.

I wonder if the same mouth breathers out there and on this forum would turn on Lynyrd Skynrd the same way the did on the Dixie Chicks for expressing their opinion.

Thankfully the left has been super great about ignoring business people and celebrities who support Trump.

I can't speak for anyone but me but their opinion wasn't the problem; my problem was WHERE they said it.....in Europe! You noticed they didn't talk shite about W (who I'm not a fan of) in TX.

I saw a documentary recently that was done years ago when more of the band members were still alive. They said they really were pissed at Neil Young and wrote Sweet Home Alabama because they felt like good people in the South were being crapped on by Yankees like Neil Young.
Neil Young in the end said he was mostly wrong for crapping on Southerners, so I guess this "feud" wasn't a bad one. They respected one another despite their original disagreement.

Hard to say... one way will be to see going forward, how many acts that spoke out against Trump see's their career's die the same death as the Dixie Chicks did.

Honestly, I came late to the Skynyrd thing. I was born in '78. I thought that they hated Neil Young until I heard a Drive By Truckers song that explained the myth. After that I double checked and it turns out it was a faux fued.
It's a really interesting piece of rock history.

I don't remember exactly how the band explained it, but I'm under the impression that they never really hated Neil Young, they just strongly disagreed with him putting down Southerners and wrote a song defending them.
I'd have to go watch the documentary again to hear it in their own words, but that's what I seem to remember.

Alton: You hear me, bitch?
Leigh Anne Touhy: No, you hear me, BITCH!. You threaten my son, you threaten me. You so much as cross into downtown, you will be sorry. I'm in a prayer group with the D.A., I'm a member of the N.R.A. and I'm always packing.
Alton: Whatchu packin? .22? A little Saturday night special?
Leigh Anne Touhy: Yep. And it shoots just fine every other day of the week too.
