re: Want to retire at 25? Go military

I signed-up for a 5yr enlistment (35E). Never saw combat. I was knocked off of a ladder while moving shelters from the Deuce and a halfs to LMTVs at Fort Gordon (63rd Signal Battallion). Two soldiers charged with securing the ladder while I tighted to straps decided to wrestle while I was on the ladder. Down I went. Broken collar bone. Broken arm. Torn rotator cuff. Concussion. I'm lucky I didn't break my neck.

I went through a Med Board and was awarded a 0% rating. VA rating when I got out? 0%, but at least they service connected it. I'll be 50 in January and staring at major shoulder surgery (again) along with other issues with my back and hips. I'm struggling with the thought of filing with the VA, because I've never been right since the accident, but don't want to be one of those guys that is taking, since I am still working.

I get both sides of what has been said across these two threads, but I take exception to those that think severe injuries don't happen in training or daily tasks. Lot's of assumptions being made in those comments. I've seen catastrophic injuries happen in training, much less daily work (depending on the MOS).

I'd like to see them shut the Nexus Letter mills down. That would be a good start. I also know that for every bad Nexus Letter, you have legit issues being kicked back by raters that are not consistent or C&P exams that are not conducting properly.

I know a guy an 11B, Infantry guy that fricked his leg up in Afganistan in a fire fight and after multiple surgeries he still walks with a cane and he only has 60% disability. I know someone else whose military service is nearly the same as mine and he has got 100%. I don't understand it. I was in the Army and did a 15 month tour on a FOB in Iraq. I was a 15Q, Air Traffic Control and didn't see direct combat. The worst we had was mortars they would pop off and with the exception of one time never got anywhere close to us. I do worry about the burn pits ,because our living quaters was downwind and less than 1/2 mile ,but other than that I was aviation and though we had an important role I don't see anything I did as worthy of disability. They have veteran groups which that is all they do, try to get people to 100%. What really burns me is some of these shitbags don't even have a deployment and never got hurt.

Someone like this bag of shite will collect $2,070 a month for the rest of his life plus gets additional school paid for because he was in the Naval Reserves for 2 years and suffers anxiety and depression? What the frick is that?

actually hardly anyone said that. there were one or two guys who might have said something about disability should be combat related, but most of us who take issue with the system arent talking about legit injuries, be they combat or garrison related. a guy who spends years jumping out of planes is going to have issues that he should be compensated for whether he ever saw combat or not. most of us get that.

The beef is with the scam. Not the truly injured or ill.

There used to be a Veteran's pension for non-retirees you could get at 65 if you had below a certain amount of assets and served during wartime. During wartime just meant you were serving while a war was going on.

When they looked at your assets to see if you qualified they would look back 5 years to make sure you didn't move stuff around to get below the cutoff.

My dad served during the Korea War and then separated. He had too many assets to qualify when he learned of the process in his 70's.

Not sure if they still have this or not.
