Can someone help me understand who might have had it easy "back then", because it sure as hell wasn't me.
I dont think anyone is trying to dismiss how hard you had to work.
BUT
home prices are more than 4X what they were in 1997 and the interest rates are the same as what you paid.
Logical people dont think you had it easy, we just know we have it harder.

You are clearly interested in just being right in whatever perceived way you want. Regardless if it gets you power or not.
We are not the same.
This is what they dont get. Winning logical arguments over the left on message boards, college campuses, Fox News...etc it has done nothing.
For years weve been in a hostage situation of the GOP telling us we must deal with them getting elected, them enriching themselves, doing the bidding of Israel, and destroying the currency....or we get Weimar Republic communist anarchy.

Listen, we already know that we are screwed until you people just age out and die. Live the rest of your life on your high hill, pretending that your generation did nothing wrong. Thats fine. There really is no point in arguing with you people anymore.

They can be tired of it all they want. Things are not nearly as bad as they perceive it to be.

Thank you. I’m as conservative as it gets. My wife and I do well. I pay BCBS 2300 a month just for health insurance for my family of 5. My family deductible is still like 18k. My home insurance is 7500 a year. I shop at Aldi to save money because of my grocery bill. My sales tax is some of the highest in the nation with awful state services. This is not the 70s and 80s where if you were a white guy with a college degree or higher you were guaranteed a good paying career and benefits.
I was in healthcare for over 42 years, so I hear ya on that! That's a lot of money to have to fork out.
Healthcare Cost Survey
Some pretty sobering numbers from a recent KFF survey. Employer family coverage now averages $28,303 a year, with workers paying $7,471, up 9% in just one year. At the same time, about 8% of Americans are uninsured, and more than half of uninsured adults say they've delayed or gone without care because of cost. Something is seriously wrong when both having insurance and not having insurance can be financially out of reach.

It's such a mindnumbingly stupid strategy from older GOP voters (boomers) and it's not hard to see that the left has run messaging circles around the GOP on the economy and affordability.
First of all, yes, young people are very easily influenced and often don't have a ton of wisdom. Let's just get that out of the way first before the boomers come in and hammer me. None of this is to say that young people aren't dumb.
Boomers and older GOP voters, with their messaging that they've thrown at young people, have pushed them right into the arms of the left and here's how. Instead of reminding young people whenever the topic of affordability and the economy comes up of how democrat policies have hurt them, they instead take that as a chance to trot out the netflix, avocado toast, starbucks tropes. They continue to tell young people not to believe their lying eyes and they paid for college delivering pizzas on the weekend and you can too.
Well, the left has taken that opportunity to tell these same young people, "you see! It's those rich GOP voters that don't care about you. They just tell you to work harder while they get rich!"
In an ideal world, the young people would investigate those claims from the left and see that it's bullshite but, as we already established, they're stupid and impressionable and yet, they're still a voting demo that you need to win elections.

No, they’re not.
If you want to have a real argument, make real arguments.
The house I bought in 2001 would sell for roughly 2.5X what I bought it. The houses that are in my subdivision that were built between 2008-2014 would sell for less than 2X purchase price.

You should read my above post. Y'all's incessant need to keep telling younger people that the fiscal situation in the country is all their fault and avocado toast this, netflix that has driven them right into the arms of the lying democrats. The left is playing chess and y'all are playing with blocks on messaging.

Who is refusing to listen?
St Louis Fed says the generations behind boomers are wealthier at the age of 35 than boomers were. Do you think that’s understood by the voters this thread is about?
And the argument isn’t about Netflix and coffee. It’s about young people being sold a false narrative in order to advance socialism.

What are you advocating? I said a couple of facts and it made you mad.
Real discussions are based on truth. Not TikToks.

The GOP just got it's arse handed to it by the under 30 demo and it was mostly due to the economy but sure, let's keep the narrative that got our teeth kicked in going.

God y'all are so stupid. This isn't hard to figure out.
The boomer GOP voters spend time telling young people that avocado toast and netflix are their enemy while the left tells them the GOP is the enemy. I can't imagine why they went hard left.

True or false, did the GOP get dick kicked by young eople yesterday and was it in large part due to the economy? Fact or fiction?
Posted on 11/4/26 at 9:14 am to Nole Man

That's a fact.
It's not a fact for housing. You must have missed the chart I posted upthread, so I'll post it again here. It's the only data that I have seen that intelligently assesses housing prices.
Houses now are 40% bigger than they were in 1980. And less than 10% of first time homebuyers buy their first house with cash, which means that the mortgage matters as much to affordability as price.
Any assessment that doesn't factor those two things in is bullshite.
When you do factor them in, this is what you get:
That housing prices are worse than they were for my parents or me is a fricking myth. It's just not true.
Now RENT? That's true. It has steadily risen in real dollars since 1970. And has been aggravated significantly by illegal immigration.
But buying a house? Nope. The math says no.
Health INSURANCE ("health care" and "health insurance" are not the same thing)?
Yes. More expensive. College? Yes, but with a caveat (below). First, let's consider some things.
More people are attending college and getting college degrees than they were in 1970 by a large margin...a factor of between 5 & 6. More people have health insurance than they did in 1970 by maybe 8% (because 84% of people already had health insurance in 1970).
And let's take a look at real disposable income over time:
Again, I never said that nothing was more expensive for young people today. Some things are more expensive and some things are less expensive.
What's less expensive? Well, factoring intelligently—which means inflation adjusted per useable mile—cars are less expensive now. The sticker price is more expensive, but when you factor that the useable life of a car is 2-3 times what it used to be, cars are less expensive now.
Appliances. Basically anything that advances in technology and scalability are relevant to. And that's true in adjusted price, but the gap gets even wider when—like cars—you factor in the increased features and quality of the item.
Things like lightbulbs and clothing and carpeting, again, due to improvements in technology of production and also outsourcing labor.
Services like stock broker commissions (A LOT cheaper now, which directly affects the value of retirement funds), air travel, communications, certain health care procedures, etc.
Agricultural products like chicken, bananas, frozen foods (some have gone up in price, to be fair...coffee, beef to name a couple).
*College caveat. When I went to college it was fairly common for students to attend a local community college for the first two years, live at home to save money, and transfer to a state school for the last two years. It was common for students to work while in school and to pay their own living expenses and even part (less common, but sometimes all) of their tuition. Living at home for two years with no room and board afforded the opportunity to squirrel away a lot for tuition.
It was less common, but I still knew a lot of students who would work full time (or more) for a quarter or two (yeah, we were on the quarter system), then drop back down to part time and go to school a quarter or two so that they could offset their tuition. It made it take longer—we'd hear students all the time laugh about being on the "six year plan" or something like that—but they graduated with no debt.
There's absolutely no reason that students couldn't still use those strategies.
And yeah, tuition is more expensive—which you would think would be an incentive to lean even harder into those strategies, but instead both parents and students turn up their nose at them and act like they are ridiculous...I'll get downvotes here just for typing that out (happens every time)—but it could still be very manageable for people.
They simply refuse to do those things. Because life HAS been so easy and so good for so long. Young people think they are entitled to not have to "settle" or "compromise" like that.
We didn't even think about it like that back then. It was just common sense to us.
Bottom line, the narrative plus the sense of entitlement is the problem that can't be overcome. The actual financial challenges can, and they are no worse than other generations have had to overcome.

Ok. What’s the policy solutions?
I don’t think avocado toast or Netflix are anything approaching the issue.
I do know that every young couple in my church is driving semi-new vehicles and have all bought a starter home.
If we can have honest conversations about what the actual issue is, that would be more interesting than the shite flinging that’s happening here.

Long thread and haven't read so maybe not new...
This was foretold in the opening of the movie Idiocracy. High IQ people are not having kids. Low IQ populations are increasing. The standard for entering college used to be good ACT, SAT scores. Now, it's anyone who is alive. Kids are majoring in subjects that will never lead to high paying jobs enabling them to pay off the govt created student loans. They are not into critical thinking like scholars of past generations. They are emotion driven and the Dems sell emotion.
