They probably feel like they took control of the discussion. Not by making their case, but instead causing reasonable people to leave the discussion and everyone else becomes distracted by the nonsense. Basically, they strive to create chaos when they think it will prevent harm to their ideology. It’s very mid level intellectual stuff but it works. It works to stifle productive discussions that do not help their ideology.
Modern democrats are dishonest bold faced liars by default. They have to be because they can never admit their ultimate goal. Most of them probably do not even know the goal is evil but they are assured they are intelligent and good people by repeating the lies ad nauseam. (AKA useful idiots)
Then there are contradictory types who always try to argue any point being made. They don’t really care about anything, other than winning/engaging in an argument. They will twist the narrative to something they can argue against. Some of them are quite intelligent but you’ll never see them contribute to a discussion because that goes against their nature.

The reason this even comes up is the nature of populism.
Those of you who argued with me over the one and only underlying, foundational principle of populism, please pay attention.
To a normal, reasonable human being, it's self evident that if a political candidate you previously supported disappoints you for some reason, you might stop supporting him/her.
To a populist, it's unthinkable. To the point that they can't even believe it, so they have to claim that you're lying about having ever supported the politician in the first place.
The only reason the populist thinks that way is because to them, you are violating the one and only underlying, foundational principle of populism.
Us vs Them.
If Trump doesn't have your full, blind, unquestioning support anymore, that has to mean you'd rather have Harris.
To a normal human, that's obviously fallacious. To a populist, that's just the logical conclusion of the one principle they live by.

I’m against high gas with Trump, like I was with the Biden administration when it was higher. It’s more understandable now with the Iran affair. Do I agree with everything Trump says or does, not even close. But will I vote for a Democrat who has no better idea of how to deal with Iran, not even close. Especially with all the democrats are trying to pack in their tent, open borders, boys in women’s sports. Trans surgeries for minors, potential political lawsuits against conservatives and so much more. . I didn’t like seeing Obama unload tons of cash to Iran as a solution either.
