Normal people want sleepovers & fun more than they want to be billionaires, and that's just fine, same as it being just fine for the Viveks out there to work 100 hours a week as investment bankers trying to get rich.

That is literally what he said.

He said we want to have fun, and that's why there aren't more STEM grads here.

It's the absolute truth, but retards lost their shite.

Vivek worked 100 hour weeks scamming people with a pump and dump scheme based around a fraudulent Alzheimers drug? Good for him.

Let's be a bit more transparent here before we start calling people retards. He quite literally said that our culture produces mediocrity & that we need less of it.

Is America perfect? Of course not. But the arrogance & absolute tactlessness with which he communicated his message have rendered it useless. The medicine doesn't help when people spit it out.

quote:

Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long. A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.

A culture that venerates Cory from “Boy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in “Saved by the Bell,” or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in “Family Matters,” will not produce the best engineers.

(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity…and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).

More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of “Friends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less “chillin.” More extracurriculars, less “hanging out at the mall.”

I get Vivek's point to an extent. Our culture has made multimillionaires out of LeBron James and Cardi B. Why is that?

On the other hand, what he describes isn't unique to America, and it's not like America doesn't produce great engineers.

According to Tara Palmieri, what doomed him in Trump world is that he didn't donate a cent to Trump 2024. Trump expected anybody with that kind of dough to pitch in, and Vivek didn't.

Trump didn't give Vivek a prestigious post because of it and then he didn't lift a finger to help him last month because of this.

I don't disagree that he stated it poorly, but would him wording it the same way you did make you feel better about him saying it? The fact is, that many of our best and brightest often don't excel in that way because, as you said, they choose different priorities. They go to college, join a frat, major in business instead of CS, chase hot women, get a good job and have hobbies, and then settle down. It's a beautiful, successful life.

Mediocrity was a terrible word to use, because you can excel in other ways, but in his world, education was the crucial concept.

What words would you describe a kid on the little league team that you coach who misses every other game because he wants to study? What would you say about his development prospects? How long would you even allow him to play? He's a shitty teammate, but he's going to save your life on an operating table some day.

Different priorities, bro.

Man...I've ben here before. Bought a 931 after a divorcre....a few years later was driving to work in a beat up truck and was very happy....it just felt right.

I was no longer trying to be something I wasn't.

I appreciate Vivekk for stumping for Trump. I don't know his aspirations..or if he just jumped on the winning side.

Time may tell.

i agree and i will say not every american is capable of being an engineer nor would they want to be. But we do have plenty of engineers here.

what you are seeing from india is just their best and brightest coming over. They have less people capable than we do and they do not understand nuances or anything other than what the book said because they lack said experiences. anything that is off and not perfect fricks them up

outside of software engineers and coding...for the most part Indians fricking suck as engineers. They can not pivot or think on their feet and everything is completely over done, very very risk adverse costing time and money. East Asians and Americans are much much better and for the most part the indians suck as part of a wider business group that isnt made up of indians.

in software, their code routinely has to be checked and corrected for small things they cant understand could be an issue.

I will say...i do agree many times America promotes mediocrity and its annoying AF how they cast jocks in shows as dumb. We do have a problem of soft expectations but the rest of the world has it worse unless they are a new immigrant family to the US and have outlier IQ genetics. they it is somewhat like you said....where they are over the top.

there can be a middle ground like you said, not everyone is capable of being worth 15million, here and in India and the goal is to create an extremely nice life.

It's not different priorities as much as it's priority A = bad
priority B = good. He was panned because his argument doesn't resonate - it's overly myopic and it ignores some of the most fundamental parts of being a well rounded person.

In your example, I could call that kid studious or dedicated etc. like one may expect, but I could also ask why they can't seem to understand the classroom concepts without studying for hours on end. Or why they can't manage their schedule. Or why they can't be decisive & commit to doing one thing instead of half assing two.

The kid in your example may grow up to be a super smart engineer, but they'll get fired when their crappy prioritization & time management skills cause their projects to fall behind & go over budget. Or they become the doctor that can't cut it in private practice because he can't communicate with his staff
