I agree with the merit of their demands but it's like reparations. Why do great, great grandchildren deserve money from a 175 years ago? If any money is paid out, it should go into a trust or some foundation that preaches against cancellation. This whole nonsense of statues and names being removed on buildings is just plain silly. I would bet that pretty much every name on every building on every college campus that was designated due to large contributions, the contributor had plenty of skeletons in their closets. Ever watched The Men Who Built America on the History Channel? They all did things that were pretty ruthless.

doubtful that donations would have clearly articulated and documented restrictions that could be tied to payments

it happens all the time

the gifts in question largely appear to be made over 100 years ago. So I think the school can keep the money with no hypocrisy. the past has to be just that. It’s the reason statue of limitations exists

You a lawyer or you just making shite up off the cuff based on your “feelings”?

I'd probably want my family's money back as well in that situation. Over the years, countless things were probably built and bought with those donations... and then the university basically labels that family as evil and strips away connections between that family and themselves.

’s the name of a law school at a small private liberal arts school deep in the Richmond suburbs, not exactly the Lincoln Memorial.

the irony, removing the name of someone who is responsible for educating thousands isn’t as important as keeping a monument to a man that is directly responsible for 600,000 americans dead.

Sounds like the University may be in violation of breaking a contractual agreement.

Is anything in this thread not just opinion?

My feeling is nothing is permanent, and a belief in perpetuity is immature and entitled.

This descendant claims a right to money given away 140 years ago. That’s stupid on its face. Guy can be angry, but he no more has a right to that money today than I do.

When TC Williams gave his money to the university it was an all male, all white, Baptist school. A woman’s collage wouldn’t open for another 50 years. I assume black students wouldn’t attend for 100 years. Things are unfair and things change. That’s the way of the world.

For the record I think they should rename the Law School after its esteemed professor Robert Bork, because paying $200,000 for a middling law degree seems like a solid borking.

Donors

not sure what legal standing they'd have to demand a donation be returned, but I love that this is happening.

You think a wealthy family with resources to donate 3.6 billion didn't think to have a lawyer craft an agreement naming the law school after their ancestor? I mean people with 3.6 billion laying around usually are pretty naïve and don't employ legal counsel or anything but....

$3.6 billion includes (among other things) a LOT of compound interest over a period of 150 years.

Win or lose, it's the reality check that is needed for all. Schools and alums. I know I was barely a blip on my schools ledgers, but I stopped donating and when asked I made sure it was known. I'm sure it didn't do anything cause I'd be surprised if it got past my profile "file," so great to see big old money like this making some stink about it.

Backlash from $3.6b opens eyes and makes news and that's key to wake people up and start questioning thing, especially the people that have donations on auto-pilot and Wills already set.

Worse case scenario in this is this is settled behind the scenes, and nothing is learned.

Yea they’ll lose because a lot of colleges and other organizations will cease to exist if they have to give back after canceling someone.

Or perhaps they will lose because once you give someone something it is theirs to do what they want with it.

Nope.

I lived in Austin 20 years ago and that shite was happening then.
