New talking point?

A vaccine developer at the Baylor College of Medicine told Business Insider that people should not expect an immediate return to normal life once a vaccine is available.

Several companies are working as quickly as possible to develop a safe and effective vaccine, which has been viewed by some as necessary for lockdowns to end and schools to reopen. While a vaccine may significantly reduce the risk of serious disease from the novel coronavirus, social distancing and face masks may still be a part of life, said vaccine developer Maria Elena Bottazzi.

"They automatically are going to say, 'oh great, I'm just going to get my little vaccine, and I can go back and do exactly the things I was doing last year,'" Bottazzi told Business Insider. "That is absolutely not true."

Ideally, Bottazzi said, a vaccine would give sterilizing immunity, meaning it would totally prevent people from becoming infected. Many vaccines don't reach that level of effectiveness, however, and only reduce the chance of developing severe symptoms of a particular disease.

Vaccines improve over time, which means the first version of the COVID-19 vaccine that is made available to the public might not be 100% effective. In fact, Moderna's vaccine, which is entering phase 3 of trials, is aiming to demonstrate 60% effectiveness.

Moderna CEO Stephanie Bancel said that if the vaccine reaches 90% effectiveness, then people can safely stop wearing masks — unless they have high-risk health conditions, in which case they may need to continue wearing them. Bancel said the company hopes to know more about their vaccine's efficacy as early as October or as late as December.

For comparison, the 2019-2020 flu vaccine is only about 45% effective against the seasonal flu and typically ranges between 40% and 60% effectiveness every year. A vaccine was never successfully developed for the SARS coronavirus in 2002, and eventually demand for such a vaccine went away, as the virus ran its course and mostly disappeared without spreading nearly as widely as COVID-19 has.

In summary, the masks could be here to stay through the end of 2020, and potentially even longer depending on how successful the COVID-19 vaccines are.

"The moment you get a vaccine doesn't mean you're going to put your mask in the trash," Bottazzi told Business Insider. "That is not going to happen. I hope people don't think that is going to be the magic solution for all."

Because the shite isn't going to work, and it never will. It is just a tool to get you to beg to have your right to be autonomous over your health choices handed over to government.

frick that. If masks works as well as they claim they do, then all masks will do long term is lead to people having weaker immune systems because they're not being exposed to common viruses/bacteria that a healthy immune system would easily fight off. An immune system that doesn't get put to work for a long period of time will become weaker and lead to far more people dying or being hospitalized from things like the regular flu.

Wait. I thought we were currently in the new normal already? What the hell? So our new normal will change back to the old normal meaning the new normal was never normal? I don't believe it!

A vaccine might not be 100 percent effective.

Honestly don't care if it is.

If all I get is a slight cough for a day because of this that I barely realize, that's a win.

Also, as soon as they show efficacy, which will be early, they can vaccinate people.

October baby!

I see these morons do not understand there difficulty of a flu vaccine versus this virus.

I shouldn't be surprised. I mean this is only a reporter who either took no time in understanding the issue or is intentionally spreading fear.

The flu vaccine is a vaccine where you are guessing what strain of the flu is going to be coming in the next flu season. Some times they guess better and have a better vaccine, sometimes they guess worse and have a worse vaccine.

This is correct. Sarah was over very quickly so no vaccine was needed for it. No problem, no need for a vaccine.

Who is going to spend millions making a vaccine for a virus that is no longer an issue?

Thank you captain obvious.

Question here. Kids that get it have no problem with it.

Adults that get it do.

It's kinda like chicken pox to a degree there.

Look, I'm literally tired of the fear mongering. We know a heck more about this virus now.

The choice is we get a vaccine by end of year or we just buck up and live life with this thing and it's conferences.

Or we can shut down there economy forever and cause the collapse of human civilization over a virus that has a 1 in 500 chance of killing you.

quote:

Actually the moment you get an effective vaccine that people have access to, yes, that's what it means.

Thankfully to warp speed, we are already making hundreds of millions of doses of different vaccines.

Some will fail. But some hopefully work. And by the time we know that, we will have enough of the vaccines to start a massive vaccination effort.

I wonder how the hell that is going to work.

Imagine the logistics of getting 200 million doses of vaccines distributed throughout the country quickly.

I guess if Amazon can get stuff delivered next day we will be able to do that.

I mean think about.

The first miracle is the Chinese create a virus to destroy the rest of the world.

Well that isn't a horrible I guess. Instead of creating that they created a virus that kills 1 in 500 people.

So I guess that's not a miracle. Just the same old cheap crap that comes out of China.

But then you create a vaccine in months, an unbelievable task.

And then you distribute it everywhere to every corner of the country, quickly.

A logistical miracle. I know Amazon does this everyday. Still amazing to think about.

I'm not really doing either now, so not much will change after the vaccine that I don't take. I'll just keep on letting the old immune system do its job

Well that cements my decision not to get vaccinated.

Might be sound advice if you’re old, sick, or both. If you’re under age 55, the chance you die of Covid is 1 in 100,000

I was seeing where it may take 2 shots. I know I did for HEP A. That isn't unusual, this guy is just involved in CYA.

If this knocks the symptoms back to a bad cold, then that is good enough. An absolute cure isn't necessary. The damn flu shot isn't 100% effective either.

The majority of positive cases are a bad cold.
