Ok but doesn't

This has zero chance of passing, and I say that as someone who recognizes the general deleterious effect of porn

As an aside, since the senator in question is a Mormon, evidently there is a sub-category of porn known as Mormon porn. I saw an interview a couple of years back about a girl, now deceased, named Zoe Parker. She had left the porn industry and had gone back home to Texas, but one of the types of porn she was doing was Mormon porn. I looked up one of her videos. It's basically just Mormon girls being dominated and humiliated by Mormon bishops. That's a weird kink

In all likelihood porn and the sexual revolution have done 100x the damage to American society than illegal immigration has.

Fair.

I think that many of the arguments against hard drugs are based on societal costs which aren’t rationally applied to other vice laws like gambling and porn.

Is that not already the case?

Yes and no. Alcohol and cigarette distributors have to make good faith efforts (and sometimes beyond) to attempt to limit minors’ access to their products.

There isn’t the same requirement for porn distributors. Can you imagine a cigarette dispenser that simply had a “Are you over 21? Click yes or no” as its sole way of weeding out minor users.

There’s a gray line between government legislating what patents do with regard to internet access and also legislating what rights parents have with regard to pharmaceutical access (e.g., birth control, hormones) for their children.

That line between Parental-State "Rights" delineation should frankly should be a lot darker and bolder AND broader (especially with respect to incoming unfettered online content.)

Kids being kids are exploiting it, getting their, "SEE? ANYTHING GOES! NOTHING IS VERBOTEN!" 'tudes from adult-state endorsement.

With all due respect, not seeing the two issues of "rights" and endorsement as remotely similar.

That is a fair point for sure. Age verification on websites is absolutely a joke. No argument there.

I am not tech savvy enough to know what the solution could be though-- i definitely don't think banning porn is the route. How can any regulation keep little Timmy from accessing xvideos on Dad's iPad at 2 a.m.?

I'll go on record that a major problem with porn is availability, and not even necessarily the eventual access.

Meaning that I think there was a benefit to a time when it was out there, but it took some effort and hiding and shame to get to. I'm sure if you were a kid in the 90s you understand what I'm talking about. The taboo element was beneficial to society, even if those who wanted it could always eventually get it.

You can't watch kiddie porn in your own house. You can't cook meth.

I'd be a lot more sympathetic to harder libertarian stances IF we had the rest of our culture in a truly libertarian state, but I live in the real world. I'm expected to pay for free school lunches, emergency room visits, subsidize health care, etc etc etc. When society is being asked to pick up the tab for stupid and harmful behavior, even if it's just self harm, society is going to be interested in those behaviors.

If Dad has an age-verified account on his iPad that isn’t locked down, I don’t see any means of keeping Timmy away from porn.

But having 12 year olds watching gang bangs on their bus ride home isn’t a societal goal or even a byproduct of a sane society.

There’s probably a middle ground that we could reach that wouldn’t be far from our current situation in practicality.

But in reality, parents monitoring their kids is the best solution.
