This is a prime example of why the maxim is perfect. Because Rohan knows he can't win by using evidence and logic, he just resorts to slander.

Having been the object of such slander, I tend to agree with the sentiment of the quote.
Though such name-calling isn’t universally a sign of a lost/won argument, it may indicate the discussion coming to an end due to frustration on the part of the one slandering and insulting.
When someone runs out of argumentative runway, the usage of insults tends to increase.
