Trying to downplay the significance of uncovering the USAID money laundering while parading the relatively small percentage it is of the federal budget total only underscores how terminally-bloated our government is in the first place.
Folks love to REEEEEEEEEE over the prospect of the income tax system being ditched for a combo of tariffs & a consumption tax that replaced embedded corporate income taxes because they cry that there's no way those can fund the entire federal government.
That premise is faulty AF when because it assumes that the current size of gov't has any business being that big in the first place.

It’s brilliant. Nothing gets the point about government waste across any faster than some of the examples being brought up.
x amount for DEI initiatives in Serbia.
x amount for Transgender opera in Columbia
Wherever… the point is the money is not for any kind of aid. Even the dumbest among us think that shite is a waste of money. Perfect one line examples of waste at the federal level.

0.7% of the federal budget is $46,900,000,000.

No shite. I'll take it and no one will hear from me again.
Just kidding, I'd be shitposting all over the internetz daily.

it certainly is, but the dynamics of government waste is an important concept to consider. The current status quo is to pass a bill or initiate a program that costs billions of dollars and encompasses thousands of convoluted elements. In all the confusion and complexity, bureaucrats grift away "small" proportions over and over again, creating generational private wealth through an intermediary.
In short, they are willing to throw away a billion of your dollars to net a million for themselves, their friends, their donors, etc. Attacking USAID is smart because its one of the key vehicles for this type of patronage.

That’s a bingo.
When the budget is $6.7T, it’s easy to sneak in a road driving through mom and pop’s property where they net $5M. One of our Republican reps did that.
Or your son gets put in charge of a couple hundred million dollar wind farm outfit. With no experience. Our dead MO Governor’s son got that appointment.

That's still $47.6B of the 2024 budget (or ~3.1% of discretionary spending).
It's important to understand the percentages, but that can quickly gloss over how much of a mind-staggering amount of money that small percentage is. By comparison, FEMA's funding last year was "only" ~$33B.

If you type out the zeros, it drives home the point.

Yep. Find out what caterer was collecting 600 million per year to serve sushi at the Pentagon. Wanna guess what you will find?

1. You have to start cutting somewhere.
2. 0.7% of the federal budget is still a lot.

I’ll keep saying it. I’m tired of hearing about rounding errors.

Got to start somewhere. I laugh when people say that it's only a drop in the bucket. Do you know what happens when enough drops are put into the bucket.
