re: USA vs China: To Sink a Carrier

HypOps simulates a hypothetical clash between the United States and the People's Liberation Army in the South China Sea. A FONOP gone bad leads to a JH-7 shootdown by an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. Tensions continues to escalate, with air battles erupting between American F/A-18 and Chinese J-11 and J16 fighter aircraft with BVR AIM-120 AMRAAMS versus Chinese PL-15 and PL-12 missiles. Hostilities will escalate to the point where China will launch YJ-83s, YJ-18s, YJ-12s and even DF-21D ant-ship ballistic cruise missiles against the AEGIS missile defense systems. Just how much will it take to sink an American carrier strike group?
Oh... I see...

I think what some are missing, a US strike against an OP FOR in a situation like this would be pretty devastating.
He who hits first wins.
He who hits first wins.

There is also another thing that is not mentioned and that is the Phillipines. Whereas bmthe US left both Clark and Subiaco in 1992, given China's recent aggression both facilities are still operational and used by the Filipino government. Actually Subic could be converted back to military easy since the Filipino government maintains a base there and relations with the Filipinos remain very good.....for some reason our former colony actually likes us.
We could move assets to Luzon very easily and in significant numbers all with a phone call and a handshake.

You don't have to sink a carrier to render it ineffective.
Do sufficient damage (eg take out elevators) that it could neither launch nor recover aircraft.
Put it out of the fight and don't think we have the resources to repair a complex carrier in any reasonable time.

I wonder where we are on those helicarriers depicted in Avengers/Captain America?

The OP is pure fantasy with innumerable considerations left out of that equation.
Mainly, Naval and Air Force assets that are unmatched and it's not even close.

This guy does a good job of narrating this but leaves out a TON - not sure if its that he doesn't understand American doctrine or if he just wanted to make it a fair fight.
The hypersonic's are the important part. You aren't jamming those.
Assuming they work at though.

The comments are pretty critical of HypOps. I'd read them as well before thinking of the applicability of the scenario to the real world.

I dont see why a standard CWIS wouldn't intercept them. I understand their lethality in air to air use, but for anti-ship use I dont see where they're much better than a regular ol anti-ship missile

the aircraft carrier
It's main purpose now is to transport planes, helo's and people that will utterly frick you up. Now, China is pretty large and has it's own defense BUT notice the war is in their sea, not ours. There's a reason for that.

Apparently they're too fast.

Speed.

I can see an American carrier being sunk, but the strike group is far larger than what was depicted, and if one were to be sunk, Beijing would be reduced to rubble. Also, the fact that there wasn't an American sub in that equation is absurd.
