HypOps simulates a hypothetical clash between the United States and the People's Liberation Army in the South China Sea. A FONOP gone bad leads to a JH-7 shootdown by an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. Tensions continues to escalate, with air battles erupting between American F/A-18 and Chinese J-11 and J16 fighter aircraft with BVR AIM-120 AMRAAMS versus Chinese PL-15 and PL-12 missiles. Hostilities will escalate to the point where China will launch YJ-83s, YJ-18s, YJ-12s and even DF-21D ant-ship ballistic cruise missiles against the AEGIS missile defense systems. Just how much will it take to sink an American carrier strike group?

Funny. I watched this the other day.

Cliffs:

The carrier group is ultimately sunk/destroyed just by being overwhelmed by all the weapons China threw at it, but it was not a full battle group (the hypo had only 3 destroyers w/ RR).

I submit that, in the context of a great power war, the aircraft carrier was effectively proven obsolete in 1945.

Full write up - with pictures

Snip from conclusion;

quote:

So, in a potential battle today between a US carrier strike group and a peer or near-peer adversary, a mere half-dozen ships with an extremely limited number of defenses will face massed salvos of hundreds of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, supersonic and hypersonic anti-ship missiles, and dozens of submarines with many hundreds of torpedoes – all of which deploy large modern warheads capable of inflicting a mortal blow against any of the ships in the group.

quote:

The plain truth of the matter, in my estimation, is that, faced with the wide array of 21st century anti-ship missiles possessed today by Russia, China, Iran, and likely even North Korea, conventional surface fleets are effectively obsolete, and this will be proven beyond dispute in the first few hours of the next great power war

Exactly. While the aircraft carrier is king in asymmetrical warfare, it is an albatross against a modern military with sufficient anti-ship weapons. Carriers quickly become too vulnerable and too valuable to commit to actions where their planes are most needed, thus eroding their usefulness.

A carrier in 2022 is about as useful as a battleship in 1941, best used for cannon fodder.

It’s a good thing when traveling the carriers have battleship escort

Generally 7-10 ships escort a carrier on their voyage

To sink this one, they needed to reduce the escort to 3 ships. I doubt the same outcome with a full group (although, I suspect a number of the escorts ships would go down)

In the age of real time satellite images , supersonic missiles and nuclear warheads any Nation will have trouble amassing large numbers of people, or equipment in total war.

Our carrier group defense system is like the iron dome on steroids. It’s wasteful to even shoot hypersonic missiles at it. We can be on anyones front doorstep in the world in less than 24 hours. Unleashing full war.

Why are the Chinese even going on offense when they have home court advantage? wasting all the hardware and lives.

wouldn't it make more sense for them to fight a defensive war? force the other side to waste their missiles and then strike.

Of course this is the worst outcome possible for the foible-prone US. And to think we sat on our asses all these years and let three countries, Iran, China and Russia develop an undefeatable array of weapons just shows what "dumbasses" we are over here. Everybody, bend over and kiss your "asses" goodbye. It's over!

And given he was there for four years as this happened, I blame Trump for 75% of this.

This guy does a good job of narrating this but leaves out a TON - not sure if its that he doesn't understand American doctrine or if he just wanted to make it a fair fight.

Not a single mention of the F35.

Not a single mention of Air Force assets in the region.

Not a single mention of tomahawk strikes.

Even if they did manage to sink an entire CSG, the next 3 weeks would wipe the PLAN and PLAF off the map. China threw a clear majority of their airborne assets forward and left the back door wide open to the rest of 7th fleet? Those planes aren't getting home. There would be 4 CSGs in the South China sea in less than 7 days with enough support assets to make any other country's head spin.

Edit: He also talked about Chinese jamming repetitively, but mentioned nothing about our own jamming capabilities. Their fighters would not have been able to get off a clear majority of those shots.

Nothing. Strike groups are more than equipped to handle anything the Chinese realistically could throw at it.

You are assuming our leadership would have the political will to make this happen...
