WASHINGTON — President Trump has approved a plan to provide Syrian Kurds with heavier weapons so they can participate in the battle to retake Raqqa from the Islamic State, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.

American military commanders have long argued for arming the Y.P.G., a Kurdish militia that contains some of the most experienced fighters among the Syrian force that is battling the Islamic State.

But Turkey has vociferously objected to such a move, insisting that the Kurdish fighters are linked with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which both it and the United States regard as a terrorist group.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is scheduled to meet with Mr. Trump in Washington in mid-May, and the American decision on arming the Kurds is likely to figure prominently in the discussion.

A few weeks ago the MSM was ridiculing Trump for 'supporting' authoritarian regimes like Erdoghan's.

I'm sure they will applaud him for this, and maybe apologize for being a little hasty.

ETA: I don't like the idea of arming anyone in the Middle East.

Yay! This can't possibly result in any blowback or negative consequences in such a volatile region!

They ridicule Trump for anything.

If he found a cure for cancer, they'd call him racist and homophobic for not finding a cure for AIDS.

Turkey is a critical ally but things are changing there. IMO if there was a way to politely and diplomatically remove them from NATO, it would be something worth considering.

Turkey continues to be a thorn in our foreign policy plans.

I wish we would vacate the whole fricking region.

They've been arming them and this is no different. They're going to increase the shipments in anticipation for the Raqqa campaign but they're not giving ATGMs or anything.

Suck a fat one Turkey. That being said, Kurds tend to be pro-American and all but my concern is that arming anyone in the Mid-East is likely going to end poorly.

We do not need to be giving arms to anyone in the Middle East other than our own military.

Turkey can go f*** itself. They have been supporting ISIS for years as they view ISIS as a nice pawn to kill Kurds for Turkey. We should get all our nukes and armed forces out of Incirlik airbase in Turkey, send those armed forces to new bases in Kurdistan, and kick Turkey out of NATO!
