Well, a dollar can only be spent once. In theory, every dollar of CEO pay can be spent on worker pay
Don't focus on the "other guy" unless (1) you are certain you are capable of doing his job, (2) you are certain you are capable of doing his job better than he can, (3) you are certain you can convince his superiors you are capable of doing his job better than he can, (4) you are certain you are worth more per unit of work than you're currently compensated.

CEO pay is a scam, related to our belief that a single person is the key to great results at a company (widely disproven)

There is a gap.
It doesn't bother me in the least.

NC I think you might have missed my point. I was stating what I often hear from the left and using math to show dumb it is.
I complete agree with you

I own stock in ExxonMobil. I'm not happy that the their CEO thought this guy would make a good partner and completely ignore his history of murder, theft, and corruption at the highest level. And what makes it worse, is that US sanctions have now made it impossible for the two to continue doing business until the sanctions are lifted.
Rex Tillerson is a huge booster of the Boy Scouts of America, which prides itself in instilling values in young men. So what does doing buisness with Putin illustrate to the Boy Scouts - frick values, making money is more important.

That's the theory. Not necessarily the reality.

OP updated.
The ratio is smaller than 4 to 1.
The comparisons only begin to look crazy when assholes like Krugman or TP only count the top 2% of CEO's- while total CEOs are themselves about 1/5th of 1% of workers- then turn around and compare that to the overall average worker's pay.

I would like to see these figures adjusted for taxes and welfare payments.

Absolutely a great point. Any "fix" to this perceived problem will have to involve tax and transfer policy.
Yet these numbers and all number comparisons thrown around, are pre-tax and transfer. They do not even think about looking at the effect of our current tax & transfer policies. That's because you lose the opportunity to make the numbers look scary when you do that.
Posted on 10/3/14 at 9:58 am to 90proofprofessional
If you adjust these figures for taxes and transfer payments the difference will be very small. It will then be clear that higher net worth are just smarter with the money they make. Therefore, having nicer educations and things.

Our CEO works from 5am to 7 or 8 every night and works on weekends. He travels all the time as well.
Last year he pretty much single-handedly saved our fiscal year.
Whatever they are paying him, it's not enough.
It blows my mind that people think there should be a law limiting how much our owner can pay him to run the company.

Im going to need more numbers than just a pay gap to determine if a gap is too big. I can tell you the gov isn't the answer to fixing it.

It may be true in general that they can't do it alone, but I have literally watched ours do it alone.
That ignores the larger point that very few people are cut out to be CEOs of large businesses.
Again, it's amazing to me that anyone can convince themselves we should have laws that limit what private businesses can pay their employees.

Of course you'd rather compare the outlier CEOs to normal, everyday workers to highlight the difference.

No, I'd rather extend the definition of "CEO" to include everyone.

And have probably 100 times the responsibility.

LOL! You think government "Chief Executives" have 100 times the responsibility of average workers?
