This is why the UMC is in this position.

We attend (future attendance unclear) a UMC in a major city (not suburbs) where the direct opposite is true. No progressive politics discussed. Biblically-centric. Gospel-focused. It's a large congregation. It's not quite SBC level, but I don't think anyone from that background would object.

I've attended another prominent UMC in the city, even larger and wealthier, which similarly involves no progressive political discussion/undertones. However, while scripture is certainly used, it's very much what I call "chicken soup for the soul." I joke that the sermons are typically along the lines of "today we'll learn about the virtues of sharing." It's kid stuff, but it's not objectionable theology.

Meanwhile, I know of other UMC congregations in the same city that are really partisan political rallies on Sunday. Their staff are community activists. They're waging war on the type of people who attend other UMC churches across town.

Just a question for the room, but what are Orthodox services like?

Progressive had a different connotation 2000 years ago.

Jesus wasn’t political except for preaching about the Kingdom of God. The difference is that of obedience to God vs compulsion from a human government. That matters.

Progressive politics seek to take the place of God and the Church.

And about respecting the state (give unto Caesar...).

But his preachings certainly fit more into the progressive mold than the Republican mold, in 2019. Which is hilarious, considering.

No.

Not to forgive, instead to declare there is nothing to forgive.

Not to love each other, but to preach love while simultaneously promoting extreme hatred toward those who disagree politically

Not to celebrate the community of believers, but to divide on the basis of race, sex or wealth

He taught to respect the government because the government is put into place by God to punish evil. Not exactly the same thing as destroying all other institutions in favor of the government, like leftist “progressives” preach these days.

Not really because, again, His teachings were not political but moral and theological. Republicans and Democrats alike are supposed to be living their lives in accordance with Jesus’ teachings. The question is whether or not it is the role of the government to take the place of the individual, the family, or the Church in these matters, and that’s where conservatives and progressives differ.

Ironically, progressives generally want to destroy religion and especaillly the Bible and live according to moral relativism and humanism. Whether there is any overlap in regards to their moral code and what Jesus taught is irrelevant since they have no objective basis for their morality and they actually rob God of the glory He deserves, which is ultimately why we are to do everything we do as Christians: we are to do all things for the glory of God.

So you don’t study much of his preachings, I see.

The EPC allows the local churches to decide whether they want to ordain women as ruling elders but they do not allow women as teaching elders.
Yes, and it's still wrong. Shame on the EPC. Also, the Teaching Elder/Pastor has no way to keep it from happening in his own church. I know because a friend of mine just left his Pastoral position because of this very reason. Really sad.

I am sure you can that anywhere. Apparently, that is what the congregation wants or they would insist on a new preacher come appointment time or they would find a church that was more into the Word. My Church is just the opposite. That church represents the minority of Methodist Churches but unfortunately, the minority is once again going to win out in this special General Conference.

When believing and accepting Jesus Christ while living a good life serving him wasn’t enough.... you have to form your cliques with silly logos and heirachies. Freaking Protestants amirite?

I wonder what his view on abortion would be. What do you think he'd say about it? Hmmm?

Lots of chanting, mostly not in English but whatever the traditional language of that church (Greek, Russian, etc), lots of incense, everybody stands. Check out the church scenes in My Big Fat Greek Wedding - pretty close, at least in my experience. It feels very reverent but there is no sermon like Americans are used to hearing, its pretty much all liturgy.

The Antiochian and OCA both use English extensively. The Russian uses a lot of church Slavonic, though they are rock ribbed solid on doctrine. Greeks have the most focus on their ethnic background.

Check it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The good thing about being Southern Baptist is that the local church is autonomous. If the SBC ever goes this route, we'll ignore it or withdraw.
