Lots of chanting, mostly not in English but whatever the traditional language of that church (Greek, Russian, etc), lots of incense, everybody stands. Check out the church scenes in My Big Fat Greek Wedding - pretty close, at least in my experience. It feels very reverent but there is no sermon like Americans are used to hearing, its pretty much all liturgy.
So... no praise band and no Israel Houghton or Kari Jobe, I would assume?

No need for ZZ top rejects when choirs of angels sing in your church.

But his preachings certainly fit more into the progressive mold than the Republican mold, in 2019. Which is hilarious, considering.
Except for the false witness and slander stuff. Amirite?

I'm Methodist. If you're not Methodist then why does this really matter to you?

I just don't like that. I don't like P&W music either, though. I like traditional hymns and stuff like we used to sing out of a hymnal. I don't even think they print hymnals anymore.

Another good rule of thumb is to think about your core beliefs and the search for every verse that says something about that topic. You will end up finding that most ever denomination picks and chooses what they want to believe. All of the hard truths are watered down to appease the masses.
Fundamentalist/evangelical churches should forfeit their tax exempt status and allow the Holy Word of the Bible to be preached unfiltered. Churches should chose to be unchained from tax exempt control by the government. This PC stranglehold that’s been thrust upon society is bleeding over into the church, time for unfiltered Truth!!!

I grew up Methodist and still attend one from time to time. My Methodist youth leader was also the Church's head usher and handled all the money. He led the youth on all our trips and camps. He did all of this while serving nights in jail for embezzling money from Gamecock football game concession stands. It was then I learned churches are nothing but political and full of hypocrisy.
I find it amusing that so many fine church going people take a hard stance on homosexuality but totally ignore the same book in the bible that calls homosexuality an abomination also calling the eating of shrimp, crab and shellfish a abomination along with wearing 2 types of cloth a abomination. So curious when does the protesting of Red Lobster begin?

Here’s a hint: the lobster thing falls under the ceremonial law while homosexuality is an issue with the moral law.

Ever sang the psalms acapella? Talk about a taste of Heaven.

Mark 7:19 For it doesn't go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
Also, you are speaking about ceremonial law for ancient Israel and the prohibition of wearing cloth made out of linen and wool. Those ceremonial laws were applicable to the ancient nation of Israel only.

Isn't a sin a sin?
I left mainly because of the hypocrisy of allowing the man to stay our head usher and church leader. I've also seen church after church having split camps and a political agenda. Jesus's message was quite simple yet man tries to keep making it complex.

People’s formative years have a profound impact. Im sorry you had a bad experience and rejected it entirely. Hopefully you find your way back one day.

It's pretty simple. Jesus loves everybody and no sin is bigger than another.

quote:Close the loop for me. What does tax exempt status have to do with what is taught in a Church? Is there a government version of the Bible that I am not aware of? What about givings? Give up 501(c)3 status and you lose tax deductible donations. Some people give more just because of that.

quote:Yes, but eating shellfish and mixed linens is not a sin any longer because they were specific laws for a specific people in a specific time as the Church was in its infancy and groping in darkness before Christ turned on the light.

quote:The Church is made up of sinners. That shouldn’t be shocking. What is bad is when those sinners aren’t called to continual repentance.

If you belonged to a church that didn’t administer discipline then that isn’t a true church and you were better off leaving. However that shouldn’t be a condemnation on the Faith, as that place was not following it.
