“Rafael Grossi, the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Tuesday that ‘tons of nuclear materials that could be put to bad use’ had been found at the site, dating from the time of Syria’s authoritarian Assad government.
‘After your courageous decision to inform us that there was another place, another site where nuclear material had been stored, we were able to access this place’, Mr. Grossi said during a press conference with Asaad al-Shaibani, Syria’s foreign minister, in Damascus. ‘We are talking about a few tons of nuclear material that could be put to bad use’.
The IAEA had previously said it was preparing to remove the nuclear material, left over from the era of dictator Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown by a coalition of rebels in 2024. They now form the Syrian government.
However, Mr. Shaibani said the nuclear material was not dangerous and would remain in Syrian custody, subject to IAEA guarantees, adding that Syria had the right to use it for civil and ?peaceful purposes.”

The former terrorist now president of Syria doesn't want to give up his nuclear material? I'm shocked.

A few things could be in play here, including them being dumb enough to pull a stunt like this. But I doubt they want to risk Scott Bessent being sicced on them.
It's always the money.
And that's why my gut reaction tells me it's highly likely a ploy to get some $$$ out of the deal.
I say 'some' and not 'more' b/c I can't find anywhere that they were being compensated. It was (and remains) a diplomatic deal with the IAEA for an operation to secure a previously unknown location now known as "Site 99".
The operation to secure the material couldn't be more impt, and for obvious reasons.
Thinking about it, Syria pulling the plug at the last moment was their only leverage.
Time will tell, but this doesn't NOT make sense. I mean, it's the frigging Middle East. They almost certainly want a pot-o-gold for being so generous.
Reminder: It's always a complete pain in the arse dealing with many/most of the countries over there regardless

Syria used to be stable....thanks to Hillary and Obama, now its a 3rd world shithole

I owe GWB am apology. When we first went to war in Gulf against Iraq, there were reports of Saddam having WMD's. That was one of the reasons I supported GWB in his efforts to overthrow Saddam. When Saddam was overthrown, there were rumors WMD's were sent to Syria but none could be found. I began to have serious doubts as if the CIA or GWB was on a personal mission to finish the job that his dad started. I lost a lot of respect for GWB since them. With this new evidence literally "uncovered" by the UN of all people, I can say I was wrong about this. He has gained a little bit of my respect back.

Another set of whack jobs in the ME Can we just find this shite and blow it to smithereens, or at least let the Turks take care of it?

The GD UN needs to get in there and get it. They spend their time demanding the US lift sanctions on the International Criminal Court and demanding the US change immigration enforcement. They need to worry less about our laws and go remove actual nuclear material from the Middle East despots.
