Despite the attempt to paint it otherwise, very few police don't follow the law.
This is quite simply false. Hell, if anything, they use what little they do know of the law to skirt it.
It's quite simply true. Police are involved in millions of interactions with people a year, there are relatively few instances of abuse. What you say regarding QI may be true for Colorado and New Mexico (or not). But based on the actions of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and others of their ilk, in the Southeast, frivolous lawsuits by social justice groups would certainly be a problem here.
By the way, anytime you agree with anything AOC says, it might be a clue for you to reassess your position on the subject. She is an idiot, the next time she is right on anything will be the first time.

Why should the taxpayers foot the bill for their crimes and screwups?

quote:Several states have limited medical liability because it was too expensive for physicians due to frivolous lawsuits. I can't see too much merit in setting up a tort system that has already failed. I can see the billboards now. "Been stopped by a cop? One call gets you paid!" Surely it will improve the quality of police applicants.
I thought the difference was that doctors got paid a lot more than police, and doctors were not routinely shot at. It's difficult enough to attract people to be police with the relentless attacks against them. If you remove qualified immunity, who in their right mind would become a policeman?

This is like saying we should give legal immunity to soldiers too, since they are routinely shot at as well (hint- the vast majority never are shot at- at all). Ironically there's far more ROE with soldiers than police officers, yet an E-1 makes enough to qualify for food stamps, yet is held to a higher standard. Based on that who would ever want to enlist?
A real life way to fix this would be to install something equivalent to UCMJ for LEO, if you really wanted to find solutions. Right now they have no legal duty to protect anyone or anything, and LEO can legally desert their colleagues or abandon their posts with no consequences whatsoever and the court gives them QI to boot.

You cannot call yourself a conservative if you support militarized and overreaching police forces.

So what you're really saying is that if we shouldn't pay for people's retirement, medical care, or student loans, we shouldn't be paying for legal immunity for LEO either.

I have watched every single video on the police activity youtube channel, by my estimate half of the police shootings are suicide by cop or drug related lunacy
it is stunning how many times they attack cops with guns drawn on them with knives, scissors, pipes, sticks, tools, etc

You support corrupt cops, and even worse, you wou don't mind that the taxpayers have to pay for their misdeeds.

And as an employer... I'm financially liable for for what my employees do, all. the. time. Limiting personal liability isn't limited nor unique to police. But the qualified immnnity laws make it quicker to dismiss in court.

This thread has been enlightening. So many awful people outing themselves. Sickening that you enjoy deaths of completely innocent people who were doing absolutely nothing wrong at the time of their death like Botham Jean and Corey Jones.

Can I just add that they didn't even have a fricking reason to pull the guy over.
They pulled him over based upon a "witness" telling them he had been driving recklessly but there is apparently no indication that the cops themselves saw any reckcless driving. Just another fricked up variation of the "We got a call" phenomenon.
Cops literally have no fricking idea what actually constitutes reasonable suspicion or probably cause. But, again. why should they? When they get it wrong, there's no actual penalty for it.

How many black men were killed by another black man?
When you discover that number is much larger than the deaths by police, sit back and ask yourself why only one of those statistics ever gets mentioned or reported.
It’s not because black lives mean shit, it’s because only one keeps society divided and fighting.

The reality is, cops just generally suck at their jobs and rampantly operate outside procedure and the law. And, black men aren't particularly special to that reality. The media just acts like they are and both lefties and conservatives fall for it for different reasons.
