NATO should immediately and publicly deny it.

I agree. I’m just saying how else can Ukraine escalate that type of rhetoric?

They are limited with what they can do. Russia will now say that Ukraine is violating Russias sovereignty. no one is going to provide Ukraine with boots on the ground.

From their perspective, it’s their nuclear option. If they are added to NATO maybe it stops Russian aggression into the rest of Ukraine? Nothing else is going to stop Russia

One would think...

If it is approved then it's clear the west wants war

They tried for a solid decade in Afghanistan.

Currently, things are so bad domestically that Putin is looking to conscript from their own prisons (exchanging a day of service in Ukraine for 10 days of their sentence) yet he's acting like they are winning.

I am a cynical bastard, but I see this as a VERY calculated (and clever) move by Ukraine.

They KNOW that the request cannot conceivably be granted by the governments of the Western democracies in the current environment, but they also KNOW that they have overwhelming support from the CITIZENS of those nations vis-a-vis the Russian invasion.

Ukraine is going to leverage that support and this request into still more military aid.

Not just advances. Ukraine needs to completely expel Russia out of their country. Anything else leads to all out war between nato countries and Russia if NATO accepts that membership.

That's basically a lot of first world countries vs Russia. That has the potential to collapse Russia. If their country is going to collapse, nukes could definitely fly out of Russia in an attempt to take some other countries out with them.

I agree with that as well. What options do you think Ukraine has at this point?

You think that applying for NATO Membership is a bad move?

They're doing pretty well right now. Keep doing that.

I think it's symbolic.

Likely has some justifications like ole hank listed earlier.

Yea but how long are they going to keep up? Folks in the US and other countries have limited attention and resources to provide.

Russia can outlast Ukraine.

It’s not going to happen, dude. General Winter is less than two months away, and he’s always been a loyal ally of Russia’s. You don’t want to fight Russia in Winter.

No they do not especially once you explain the ramifications of it. It’s World War III, put and simple. No if, ands, or buts. No one who is remotely sane wants WWIII.

Serious question: If Russia seems destined on accepting its fate as starting WW3, do we ever have a legitimate reason to intervene in their aggression?

I mean, responding after all may cause WW3

More accurate to say that you do not want to INVADE Russia in winter.

Geographically and meteorologically, eastern Ukraine is essentially indistinguishable from the parts of western Russia that Nappie and Hitler attempted to invade.

Who is the invader in this little scrap?
