Economics has been designated as STEM by the federal government since 2018. Several economists since then have won the Nobel in applied sciences.

The out I gave you was, some universities (mostly public) don’t include the broadly defined economics degree program as STEM, but do include specific programs like quantitative economics for example.

For hundreds of years, economics has been a social science. Seven years ago, a government agency said certain Econ programs qualify as STEM.
