I say give the farm a choice: pay a fine and the workers pay a fine for the laws already broken or deport the workers. If fine is paid, and workers have no criminal record, give them temporary visas as long as farms agree to pay similar wages and perks that legal migrant workers get

They have unlimited H-2A agricultural visas now. Many farmers currently use those but many have also figured out they can just ignore that option and hire illegals cheaper and with no contractual obligations like they would have through the H-2A program. Lack of actual immigration enforcement for decades has led to everyone skirting the options already in place to take the cheaper, easier, more exploitative route.

Farm workers are a small percentage of the illegals that came over during the previous administration. They also don’t typically live in the large urban markets where you see all the violence. I’d rather all illegals go but I could live with this IF they are vetted.

This is bad. They are here illegally and we should enforce the law. If we really need immigrant labor to harvest crops, Congress should get off their asses and pass an immigration law that provides for guest worker status for farm labor.

This is the correct answer.

This isn't what I voted for.

The black market is more lucrative than picking vegetables. It seems to be something folks leave out of the equation and employes more people.

How big is the black market and what are it's principal drivers?

They already have. In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act - the same legislation that gave amnesty to millions of illegals already here.

That was supposed to be a give and take "bipartisan" bill, but as usual, all the carrots were gobbled up while the sticks laid there and rotted because no one ever wants to actually enforce the responsibilities part.

H-2A and H-2B visas were created in the 1986 IRCA. Employers exploit the H-2B visas to bring in thousands of foreign workers to undermine US workers and largely just ignore H-2A visas because it's cheaper and easier to hire illegals and there are no punishments for employers who get caught.

We HAVE the laws. LINK

Administrations have chosen to ignore them for almost 40 years.

I stand corrected. THIS is the correct answer.

Now all we have to do is follow the law.

I couldn't give you an exact number but it's a pretty big market and the driver is demand

Demand for what? I'm just trying to figure out wtf you guys are talking about in the context of the black market meaning we need ten million illegals to do work Americans won't do.

With no end in sight. There are some costs in being compliant with law. But, apparently, they won’t need to. TACO.

Most farm hands could be replaced with machinery when the price is right. We're probably close to that point.

But then what happens when your John Deere tractor costs and arm and a leg to repair and has to go their shop for repairs and costs thousands in lost time and repairs.

My question is… how does the government determine if someone is a “farm worker”? Literally anyone can make the claim, just like they all claimed “asylum” under the Biden admin.

From a philosophical standpoint I'm swayed by the prospect of importing millions of immigrants to work here under the following conditions:

1. They check out as being friendly to the US and support our cultural values.

2. They are here legally and we can actually keep track of them, find them if they run afoul of the law, etc.

3. We stop paying our own able-bodied citizens to not work.

4. We either subject employers to the same minimum wage and other regulatory burdens of hiring them that they have to meet for citizens (sans FICA), OR (better), we get rid of them for our own citizens. It make s no sense to say everyone deserves a "living wage," for example, except brown people from across the border.

Until then, nah.

I'm quite sure you've been saying a LOT your entire life..

Americans likely won't do those jobs at slave wages, when they (Americans) can suckle from the gubment teat. Kick the illegals out and companies will be forced to pay more to their workers. Then stop the flow to the teat and Americans will be more inclined to work...

Then you're not for keeping any of the illegals working here now. The number of able-bodied working-age men not working in the US right now is ridiculous, and then add the women that don't have a breadwinner in the household.

Yeah. Exactly.

The point is that if we weren't paying citizens to sit on their asses and not do anything, we wouldn't have to import labor to get these jobs done.

Yeah. Exactly.

I can't find it right now but I saw a graph showing the number of "disabled" on benefits in the US is something around 40 million, and nearly doubled in just the last ten years. It's insane what we're allowing/funding.

No longer true. Black market is lucrative enough to take care of them.
