Trump wants to end federal flood insurance in flood prone areas

I'm in agreement with him on this. Why offer this when there is almost 100% certainty these areas will flood yet again in the not too distant future?

President Donald Trump proposed ending federal flood insurance for new homes in areas most at risk of flooding, a change that could curtail new construction in vast parts of Florida, Louisiana and along the Eastern Seaboard.
Trump’s plan would radically overhaul the program created in 1968 to help protect homeowners who live along coasts or near rivers. The idea, sent by the White House to Congress, created an unlikely set of responses: Home builders warned it could stifle the economy while climate activists, who have battled Trump, called the idea smart.
On Wednesday Mick Mulvaney, the director of White House Office of Management and Budget, sent a letter to Congress calling for changes to the taxpayer-subsidized National Flood Insurance Program, which is $25 billion in debt thanks to ever-worsening storms. Mulvaney’s proposals included preventing homes built in flood plains after 2020 from obtaining insurance under the program. Those homes could instead seek private coverage, which is often prohibitively expensive -- if it’s available at all.

Disaster plan. It ain't that simple. Can't privatize flood either cause they just want to take the good risks
Private insurers aren't offering coverage on known flood risks, zero security in the future market

There is no justification for subsidizing coverage for people who knowingly build in an area that will flood
I'm sure he will be attacked for this but it's absolutely correct

WTF?!

At least stop calling it insurance. It isn’t. It’s literally a rainy day fund thrown together by every taxpayer.

Well that's fine. This will be helpful environmentally too.

Toddy has finally given in. He is a Trumpkin now.

Flood insurance should be required on all federally backed loans, don't give a shite what flood zone you're in. Make program more profitable and diversify risks

Exactly. Although that rainy day fund keeps growing as more development happens.

I agree with Trump - time to end this

What kind of liberal mind trick is this?

Idea that has surface appeal to some people, but it can’t withstand analysis in practical terms.
Not all “flood prone” areas are beachfronts properties.

Not all flooding is in "known flooding areas"

Buy insurance or be prepared to deal with the consequences no matter where you live.
The federal government shouldn't be subsidizing risky decisions.

Correct
All known flood areas however over a certain threshold should have the federal flood insurance program coverage removed
There is plenty of space in this country for everyone to live that will NEVER flood

absolutely agree, and this is a very good thing that Trump did...
it's hard to have sympathy for people either too stupid or too stubborn to take the necessary precautions if you are gonna build in harm's way... that should be on the individual, not the collective...
