Are you saying countries don’t pay money directly to NATO which helps fund “nato” bases and other things?
There are almost no NATO “bases”. There are the NATO HQ’s which yea, each member pays their share for. Office staff, buildings etc. typical overhead stuff.
Military installations generally belong to the host nation. We usually make our own improvements and pay rent to use them, yes. We do that everywhere on earth, inside and outside of NATO nations.
But all of that is nothing compared to defense spending, which is what very stupid people reference when they talk about NATO funding. And no, defense/military spending (the thing with the 2% and now 3.5% threshold) is not paid to NATO. It’s each country’s own domestic defense budget as a percentage of GDP.

while a trillion is a tad hyperbolic, we have spent around 25 trillion on NATO since it's inception plus keep around a trillion dollars worth of assets at NATO bases. That's without the nukes.
Yes, we pay to have our assets based there and for improvements on European bases.
We would have done that and will continue to do that regardless of NATO membership because it’s in our national interest to forward deploy assets in Europe

i spent my middle school years in Kaiserslautern when my pop was stationed at Ramstein.
i've seen a NATO base or two.

Sweet. We’d have paid the west Germans to have the base and made the improvements etc that we did whether NATO existed formally or not.
Just as we’d continue using our European bases today.
Plus, Kaiserslautern was never, ever a “NATO” base. It was West German.

Name one benefit of leaving NATO.

We get nothing from them except for a big bill - we are self sufficient ifwe want to be, Europe need us far more than we need them - we need to withdraw our troops, abandon our bases, quit paying for their defense and withdraw from NATI - I’m not seeing any benefit to staying in, nor any benefit from the UN or WHO - it’s time to get out and just take care of ourselves

How much money does America pay to NATO?

Name one benefit of leaving NATO.
So, the benefit is dollars not spent
Now you - and 1 benefit of staying in

Kaiserslautern isn't a base. It's a city. Many of the troops live in K-town that are stationed at Ramstein, Semback, Landstuhl, Clayburn and Kapon.
Ramstein is most definitely a NATO base. In fact it's the home of NATO Air Command.

Germany didn't even have a military until 1955. And even then, they had to take baby steps.

oddly enough we are in debt nearly the same amount of money we've spent on NATO.
the primary function of NATO was to stop the spread of communism. Now most of Europe and 45% of the US are begging to become socialist/commies.
It's time to shut it down. We withdrew from SEATO. Why can't we withdraw from NATO?

They're not. Europe has 500 Million people, a GDP close to that of the US, advanced technology, nuclear weapons, and a surprising conventional arsenal when you add it all up. The Russia of today can't even beat Ukraine--they would get absolutely pummeled in a conventional war with a United Europe.
If the US quickly dropped NATO, you’re assuming they don’t all start scattering to their own spheres and interests. Maybe they carry on the extremely limited Russian influence, but that would be a polar shite.

NATO’s direct costs to member nations, often referred to as “common funding,” came to €4.6 billion in 2024, or about $4.7 billion in U.S. dollars, with each member nation contributing a percentage of their Gross National Income (GNI). U.S. contributions accounted for about 16 percent of these common funds in 2024—roughly $753 million. That’s less than 0.1 percent of total U.S. military expenditures.

Won't happen, imo. I think would certainly do it in a heartbeat if they push back hard enough.
But I don't think he truly wants to.
I believe he just wants more out of them, and will ultimately get it,
And he has also corrected their thinking going forward, that we will just keep doing what we've been doing. Makes it easier for future administrations in dealing with them. Just my opinion.

Why was NATO even formed?
Posted on 4/8/26 at 7:56 pm to Mickey Goldmill
is that admin funding? or complete funding? you are looking at an annual administrative cost that goes into the NATO kitty. Spain and the UK take all of that. How much does the equipment cost that is parked over there? The nukes? The satellites?
I'm talking total spend since inception.

Newsweek (2024): $21.9 trillion over the first 75 years.

Recent estimates (through 2025): ~$23.8 trillion for the US share.

US share of NATO-wide defense spending has averaged around 66–70% over decades.
I'm talking total spend since inception.
