Spoiler Alert: Not that I care one way or the other, but if the POTUS asks the DoJ to investigate this they can look into it to see if a person's civil rights were violated, but what they won't be able to do is bring criminal charges against anyone unless they find that a federal crime was indeed committed. It's happened plenty of times before.
That said, I'm sure he was just placating whoever asked him the question. The feds already determined that everything seems to have been handled by the book. They have already been assisting local authority on the case.
