U.S. farmers lost their fourth largest export market this week after China officially cancelled all purchases of U.S. agricultural products, a retaliatory move following President Donald Trump’s pledge to slap 10% tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese imports.

quote:

“It’s really, really getting bad out here,” said Bob Kuylen, who’s farmed for 35 years in North Dakota. “Trump is ruining our markets. No one is buying our product no more, and we have no markets no more.”

quote:

Agriculture exports to China dropped by more than half last year. In 2017, China imported $19.5 billion in agricultural goods, making it the second-largest buyer overall for American farmers. In 2018, that dropped to $9.2 billion as the trade war escalated, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

quote:

Kuylen, who farms roughly 1,500 acres of wheat and sunflowers, lost $70 per acre this year, despite growing good crops. Current government subsidies only cover about $15 per acre, he said. There’s no incentive to keep farming, except that I’ve invested everything I have in farming, and it’s hard to walk away,” he said.

quote:

Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, said China’s exit is a “body blow to thousands of farmers and ranchers who are already struggling to get by.”

Think of it as the chemo that puts the cancer into remission. A necessary evil. If you want perfection on planet Earth and an end to struggle, conflict and malevolence, become a Progressive philosopher and buy a herd of rainbow unicorns.

Based on all the negative shite I've been reading on the PoliBoard today it looks like Texas turning blue in 2020 will usher in a new President in the next election. Problem solved??

Lol, you can't lose markets for commodities. What a bunch of garbage. If china buys their soybeans exclusively from somewhere else, then whoever would normally have bought those beans is going to need to buy their from somewhere. You can't just magically manifest supply

My thought exactly. If this continues for a few years I can see other countries ramping up production which could hurt. However, in the short term countries being displaced by China's purchases will have to look elsewhere which would be back at the USA.

During a discussion with a commodities trader, he mentioned that while China buys less soybeans from the USA directly, they are buying more from Brazil.

Who is buying more soybeans from the USA? Why Brazil, of course. This is a way to get around the tariffs.

How? At 40 bushels an acre, $4 per bushel, he should have grossed $240k. If he lost $70 per acre his costs were $345k. What the frick is this guy using for fertilizer? Gold dust?

Hell, he could have leased the entire 1500 acres out to someone else and made $72k for doing absolutely nothing but sit on his arse.

The farmers debt to the government at one time was the largest debt owed to the US. In 1981 it was $40bil. They need to suck it up. All they hire is cheap labor and pay very little taxes. No sympathy here.

Georgie, fake news would be having an LSU logo by my name.

But the trade war is hurting farmers. Nothing to be debunked about their concerns and suffering.
