I know what you are thinking, but seasonal flu is OBVIOUSLY down because we are all practicing measures to reduce flu spread. To me, this is just more evidence that these measures work for seasonal flu, but COVID really doesnt gaf about them and will spread regardless.

I'm still amazed at how he saved millions of American lives. We were supposed to have close to 3M dead with initial projections.

Or what's more likely is they're competing viruses and you can't get both at the same time and Kung Flu wins the battle between the two.

I just have a hard time believing nasty humans around the world are collectively practicing hygiene so well they have destroyed the flu this year.

Whatever is the cause, I don't think the math on that particular hypothesis is gonna check out.

people globally are doing more then they ever have to prevent influenza spread. Are we really shocked that seasonal flu numbers are way down?

The takeaway here is that these measures are effective against seasonal flu, but havent really worked against covid. In fact, european nations with the strictest measures are being ravaged by new cases, so why are we still doing it?

It isn't way down, it's basically eradicated at 98%.

20 or 30% offhand I could believe but 98%?

its early af though. the numbers are something like 40 positives on 10k tests this year compared to 395 positives on 16k tests last year.

Its a big difference, but still too narrow and too early to claim eradication.

Interesting. Why did those measures not work before? Where is the cornucopia of studies showing that such measures prevented respiratory viruses before this year?

these are long standing preventative measures for flu transmission. Thats why there being used from the beginning. Mask wearing, for example, is common throughout Asia. We've just never practiced these measures, globally to such a degree before.

How tf are you not getting this? The government is not coding seasonal flu as covid. Even if they were, it wouldnt be enough this early to account for the current spike. Its too early. At this point, we would typically only be dealing with a few hundred total cases.

Flu is down because the whole planet is locked tf down.

If you can't understand the context of the usage or refuse to for gotchas then we're not having an honest discussion.

Like a virus cage match, in your rib cage. I thought something had just got disconnected in there and there was a hose flappin around

yes, I did.

flu season has just started. We dont even have 100 cases yet and you are claiming its "eradicated". We didnt even have 400 cases at this point last October. The sample size simply isnt big enough to make that claim.

The article reinforces my point that traditional flu suppression measures work well for seasonal flu, but dont really work for covid. And this is consistent with all of the contradicting science we've seen especially on mask wearing. Our only ticket out of this thing is herd immunity and/or vaccination.
