Early WaPo reporting on this back in February seemed to say that Trump kept these boxes in sitting around the White House residence when he was still in office.

Just an fyi, there is substantial jurisprudence that any formally classified documents in the possession of a former President are presumptively declassified. Government has to overcome that presumption.
